Hero teacher averts disaster
April 07, 2003
A QUICK-thinking teacher has averted a potential disaster when the driver of a schoolbus collapsed at the wheel on a Melbourne freeway.
Forty students and teachers from Heathdale Christian College in Hoppers Crossing, west of Melbourne, were on their way to a school camp when the driver collapsed just after 10am (AEST).
The bus was travelling about 100 kph on the Princes Highway at Laverton when the incident happened, but physical education teacher Nick Smith jumped to the rescue and stopped the bus.
Hobsons Bay traffic management unit Senior Constable Cameron Scott said the bus was just 200 metres from a 90-degree turn when Mr Smith pulled it up.
"Going 100 kph into a centre barrier or other traffic, there would have been loss of life for sure," he said.
*yay* .. no clowns on him!
