Is Saddam Dead?

Wed Apr 09, 2003 6:25 pm

Resistance in Baghdad has completely crumbled. None of the "minders" which watched over foreign journalists' reports appeared this morning. All police and civil service in Baghdad has disappeared. It appears that Saddam's regime and those which supported it have fled or gone into hiding.

Now there is this report: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=578&e=4&cid=578&u=/nm/20030409/ts_nm/iraq_usa_saddam_dc

Excerpts:

Multiple U.S. intelligence sources saw Iraqi President Saddam Hussein enter a building in Baghdad on Monday but did not see him leave before the structure was destroyed in an airstrike, The Washington Times reported on Wednesday, citing U.S. government officials.

One official said some analysts believe the multiple eyewitness accounts suggest that Saddam is dead and the official described the CIA (news - web sites) as being "in a state of euphoria," the article said.

Of course, they cannot confirm anything until they find a body, or at least body parts large enough for testing.

A pity, really, if he died this way. He would not have seen it coming. I would have wanted him to have to face an angry lynch mob.

I think he may infact be dead. I am sure people know it also. But announcing it outright will only serve to make him a martyr and prolong this war. Let the regime crumble first (it is now) and then let's tour the bunker.

A fitting end to have died in a bunker just as another tyrant did 57 years ago.

Yeah, but that tyrant died by his own will.

.. I suspect that he might be waiting for the citizens to start cheering, and then the secret police will move out and get rid of the 'traitors'.

Excerpt:

Looters were quick to take advantage. Reuters Television crews watched cheering crowds sack the U.N. headquarters in the Canal Hotel to the east and drive off in U.N. cars.

Oops.

The American military had better get guards on all these palaces and other government buildings. The new government will need all those records they can find, and at least some of the palaces must be preserved intact, as a museum to show what kind of rich opulance he lavished on himself while people starved. The museum would also house photos of every victim of his rule, including those killed in the wars he started, and the Iraqis he killed for whatever reason. If they can bring in some of the torture equipment from Uday's place, that would be a bonus.

Under no circumstances should the history of Saddam's rule be allowed to be forgotten!

I don't care how he died...as long as he is dead...we live in a better time now that he is gone. Fat bastard. Thats a good idea for a museum Charles.

CPH-R, if reports coming in from Iraq are true, there's nothing left of his secret police. Just before going to bed last night, both CNN and Fox were reporting that Centcom has said that virtually all resistance had stopped in Baghdad.

Whether he's physically dead or not, it seems the fear of him is dying quickly, and that may be more important that his own physical demise.

Well Americans say no, but some Lt Col was proud that they did what they had to.

The people on teh ground are probably wondering what the hell.
