Turned Back At YYZ Due To Sars

Fri Apr 11, 2003 11:00 am

Oh, the romance of air travel  Big grin
Yesterday I headed off to work, YVR-YYZ-FRA-TIP (Tripoli). Checked in at YVR, bag tagged through to TIP, went to YYZ, got on the FRA flight, then it all fell apart. As I was putting away my carryon bags an AC staff member said I had to get off, since the Libyan Government announced that it was not allowing passengers from Canada, and several other SARS countries. AC then gave me the choice of going to FRA, or staying at YYZ, which I opted for, along woth one other guy also headed to work. The flight left 1/2 an hour late while they searched for our bags. After that, a night at a hotel, and a flight back to YVR, all at my expense. What a PITA! Anyone else had similiar problems?

All at your expense? That's rough. Would insurance cover it maybe?

Offhand, have you worked in Libya before?

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I'm hoping that my employers might cover it, but they are notoriously slow at paying expenses. I've worked in Libya for 2 years, on a 6 week/5 week rotation. The trips back and forth have become a chore, even when all goes well. At least I didn't get stuck in FRA  Smile BTW, I noticed a few people wearing masks in YYZ, but not too many.

Why are you going to Tripoli?
Anyone can fly, only the best Soar.

I would like to ask what sort of work you do in Libya if I may be so bold? Six weeks in, then five weeks out has got to be tough on your stability. Just when you get comfortable it's time to leave.

I was just in YVR and always find that airport great. Vancouver is a great city and I would love to live in one of those new condo's up by Coal Harbour and fly seaplanes out of the waterfront.

What airline to TRI?

Regards

Trust me, after 6 weeks in the middle of nowhere, working 11 hours every day, "comfortable" is not the word that comes to mind  Smile Having said that, though, the constant back and forth does make for a strange lifestyle, since I miss many special occasions at home.
Lufthansa is who I fly with, although KLM, British Airways, Swiss, Malta, and many others serve TIP as well.
Singapore Air, I'm an aircraft maintenance engineer, working for a Libyan oil company that has a couple of Twin Otters.
ClipperH, thanks for the kind words on YVR, I am proud of the airport and city. It's nice to hear the comments from the other passengers when we arrive, especially on a nice day.
