How Many Countries Benefit From The US Foreign Aid

Mon Apr 14, 2003 7:09 am

I was curious as how many countries benefit from US aid, and how much $ do they get. It would be interesting to find out the total amount the US offer in foreign aid the divide that number by the population of the US and see how much Americans shell out from their own pockets each year.

The country that has been getting the most US Foreign Aid over the past couple of years has been Israel, not really an underdeveloped Third World country, if you ask me.

Globally, the US is one of the countries which spends less on Foreign Aid. 21, mostly european countries, have a higher percentage of GNP which they spend on Foreign Aid than the US. Denmark, spends 1.01% (2001) where the US only spends 0.11% of their respective GNP.

The objective agreed by all countries to spend at least 0.7% of their GNP on Foreign Aid has only been reached so far by 5 countries (Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Sweden).

When it comes to amounts spend on Foreign Aid, the US is the #1 (higher GNP). What is interesting is that American private foreign aid (charities, religious groups, donations, etc.) is more than 3 times higher than governmental aid ($34 billion private aid vs. $10 governmental aid).

As for official US Foreign Aid, these are normally heavily tied to either the US's Foreign Policy, hence the billions of dollars Israel has been receiving as Foreign Aid and the multi-billion dollars loans that have been revoked by the US of the last decades.
