S.H.I.T.

Fri Apr 18, 2003 9:51 pm

In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything had to be transported by ship. It was also before commercial fertilizer's invention, so large shipments of manure were common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, it not only became heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas.

As things were stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOOOM! Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening.

After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the term "Ship High In Transit" on them which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this volatile cargo and start the production of methane.

Thus evolved the term "S.H.I.T," which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day.

That is one nice little unpolitical story - and it sounds so true...  Big thumbs up

Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

And for an encore relate the story of how "F.U.C.K." was derived.

I was told that in earlier times, constables would write the initials on tickets to save space and time for people caught in the act... it stands for Fornication Under Carnal Knowledge.

F.U.C.K.

I know this one off the top of my head, it means, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. I think you know what that means, in fact you could be put in stocks and have a sign around your neck that said, "FUCK".

Also adulters were treated similiarly but indians would slit the nostrals of wives that cheated.

I heard this, but I wonder if it's true. Could be, but I doubt it. Might be on snoops even. But here goes...I can't recall the timeframe, but I'm thinking the 15th Century. Peasants of many kingdoms were not allowed to bear children unless it was approved by the Royalty. Apparently, this was a result of limited resources and disease. People would be arrested if caught having sex without permission. If a couple got permission, a sign was hung on their door so guards would not arrest them if caught. The sign said F.U.C.K. which stoof for 'Fornicating Under Consent of King"

"Shaddap you!"

A good example of why you shouldn't believe everything you read on the net.
