Is a "spring brake" an upgraded version of an "anti-skid brake"? I imagine there were many big parties when the first anti-skid brake was successfully tested.

Yes, spring brakes will stop the vehicle if air pressure is too low. There might be a party afterward if the spring brake safe you from a crash.

David B. ---- you just reminded me, the spring brake is the principle of the Westinghouse Air Brake.
