Best Collegiate Nicknames

Thu Apr 24, 2003 10:18 pm

We all know that US colleges have some of the best and most unique nicknames in the sports world. What are your favorites?
UC-Irvine: Anteaters
UC-Santa Cruz: Banana Slugs
Haverford: Black Squirrels
Amherst: Lord Jeffs
Pomona: Sagehens

It's hard to top the Banana Slugs, but how about:

Southern Illinois University - Fighting Salukis (what the hell is a Saluki?)

University of South Carolina - Gamecocks (heh, heh)

My college is pretty bad actually, the Hiram Terriers.

I also like the Kenyon Lords and the Oberlin Yeomen, but my favorite is the Buckeyes from The Ohio State University

My fav are the Virginia Tech Hookies. I am not completely sure what a Hookie is, but I think it is a turkey oh some kind.

Lacrosse (and now Basketball) power house Orangemen. Not quite your typical mascot.

Is it TCU that is the Horned Frogs?

My favorite nickname has to be from two High Schools in Cleveland-both public schools, and I can't remember which schools have them: Scarabs and Tar Blooders.

God, they sound scary!  Big grin

Then there is the Mount Union Purple Raiders-great name, for one of the great football schools in America.

Actually Virginia Tech is "Hokies" not Hookies.

University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (my alma mater)

Swarthmore College Fighting Quakers (huh???)

University of Alabama Crimson Tide
better yet, Harvard University Crimson (*nothing*)
Marshall University Green Wave

My old high school used to be the Ossining Indians but they are now the Ossining Riverhawks... A riverhawk is not an animal, not a bird, no... it's a flower.

Swarthmore College Fighting Quakers

Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron?  Laugh out loud

One of the greats has to be Marshall Thundering Herd.  Big thumbs up

Alpha_1 got it right... the Marshall Green Wave is the marching band, not the team(s).

What's wrong with the Crimson Tide? Out of all the "strange" names posted so far, Bama has the best football record for sure.

Go DAWGS!

I didn't say that there was anything wrong with "Crimson Tide," just... what is it? Do we really want to name a school team after a poisonous shellfish disease?

I do like the name of Akron, the Zips, and Kent State-Golden Flashes.

Why Kent has an eagle as their mascot, and not some pervert in golden pants that he can take off easily, is beyond me.  Big grin

(just kidding)

I'm a proud Carolina Gamecock. Go Cocks!

Wake Forest Demon Deacons is a pretty good one, I think.

Homer71, a Suluki is a breed of dog.

Also, this isn't a college mascot, but my high school was the Fighting Yellow Jackets, which I think is a pretty good mascot, but our colors were orange and black!

Stanford University - Cardinal (no plural - just Cardinal)

Thanks Emceeoh, I suspected Saluki is some kind of canine.

How about the University of Hawaii changing their mascot for some of its sports teams from Rainbows to Warriors? Why...what does a rainbow seem to suggest?  Big grin

Actually, isn't Warriors politically incorrect (American Indians)? Marquette University changed their mascot from the Warriors to the Golden Eagles.

Homer71, don't even get me started on the subject of schools changing their nicknames. Most, like Marquette, St. John's, Miami of Ohio and Eastern Michigan caved in the the PC Police-most of whom had nothing to do with their schools, and pressured them to change their names.

Miami had a gorgeous Indian as their painted symbol-as did EMU, but with PC Police, you better agree with them, or you'll be made to pay. Miami was the Redskins, so they had some validity there, but EMU was the Hurons-hardly an offensive name. I have no use for PC Police.

I agree, Alpha 1

Fortunately, they have virtually no influence on professional sports (Redskins, Indians, etc.)...yet

Remember PETA asking Green Bay to change the name of Packers, because it was meat-packing?

Yeah, PETA likes to ask people to change their mascots just to get a rise out of them. Last year PETA asked my school (University of South Carolina) to change its mascot, because cock fighting is vicious and blah blah...you get the idea. The president responded quickly with a "no, not ever" message.

I think my favorite name comes from a team that used to be (I think they're defunct) a minor league hockey team-the Macon Whoopies.

Great name!!  Big thumbs up

Correction: that hockey team is the Macon Whoopee, not the Whoopies.

Same thing. I'm surprised it hasn't been banned for being too naughty for someone like Santourm to deal with.  Big thumbs up

Back home, we had a high school we used to play in sports, they were the Smokey Bears....

It was better than MY school mascot...the Hilltoppers. My high school and WKU are the only two schools I've ever seen with that one.

I always wished Upenn would've changed their mascot from the Quaker to the fighting Quakers... it might've swayed my decision not to go there =P

I think the GW Colonials is pretty hilarious too.

Sad to say, but the Macon Whoopee franchise folded last year. They do have a new hockey team (in the brand new Atlantic Coast Hockey League) called the Macon Traxx (clever huh?)

If you can believe this, my hockey coach used to play for the Macon Whoopee.

I'm biased, but how about the University of Iowa Hawkeyes.

What's a Hawkeye? Why a character in a book, how novel (pun intended). Or maybe it's Daniel Day-Lewis:

Connecticut College Camels...

Stanford University Cardinal (and their mascot is a giant pine tree of some sort, which looks wierd, but it's more interesting than the generic bear that UCB has)

This is not college, but there is (or used to be) a minor league baseball team in Manchester, CT that were called the Manchester Silkworms... (textile town)
