Zrb2, I don't quite follow you. Of course Health Canada has every right to issue travel warnings to Canadians, based on sound and accurate assessments and information/data pertaining to the applicable destination.
In regards to Health Canada warnings "hurting" the economies of the designated nations, I would think that health issues and the saftey of
Canadians is the primary mandate of the government of Canada, and the economic fallout of said designated nations unfortunately, but must, take
a back seat.
Toronto, and Canada (Including Health Canada, of course) yes, are "upset" at the WHO designation of YYZ
in relation to the SARS issue, as our medical officers are adamant in their claim/argument that the "situation" here is most definitely NOT a crisis;in fact it is indeed levelling off, as T.O. (thankfully) has not reported a new case of SARS in 19 days, which is very positive news. We are "upset" that the WHO utilized outdated and inaccurate data on YYZ
(according to Health Canada and the Ontario medical office) in reaching their decision, announced a couple of days ago. Yes, we are upset when we feel our city has been wrongly labeled, just as any other city or nation would feel "upset" should this unfortunate set of circumstances be in their "house".
Toronto is NOT in the midst of a crisis. The population of Toronto (generally)
are not in a panic over this, as we honestly feel there is no reason to do so. Toronto's proficient medical community has worked around the clock and has/is effectively diminishing daily the level of SARS cases. And now, unfortunately, Toronto's tourist industry, and many other industrial sectors must pay a mighty price for the WHO designation. We are most definietly NOT a Leper colony. Trust me, if there were any reason to worry in Toronto, the hundreds of thousands of intelligent citizens would most certainly take some action to "save their hides". Instead, you can find us where we've been from day one: in shops, restaurants, cinemas and out on the streets, without surgical masks, thank you very much.
