London To Bid For 2012 Olympics

Thu May 15, 2003 9:41 pm

And I will give it as much support as London gave Birmingham and Manchester when they bid for the Games: none.

Hey, Manchester bids for everything.

At least it has excellent sporting facilities as a consequence.

Sometimes I had the velodrome (easily one of the best in the world) all to myself, for training sessions...

And how is London going to organise it? They couldn't even organise a triathlon last year! If London wants to say how good it is, it should broadcast all successful sporting events it has undertaken and not rely upon what happened in Manchester and Birrmingham over the last year.

Yes Bobrayner, we bid we get things built*, politicians and UK sporting bodies paid lip service to our merits then we have the IOC head stating that Manchester needed an international airport amongst other things. One wonders what detritus the London media espouses on behalf of "not London" if someone on of relative importance didn't know that.

* Amazing how we managed to have an 80,000 seater stadia converted into a 35,000 to 48,000 seater, razed the area where it was to be built and constructed it in the time it took for Wembley to be knocked down. And yes, tour stadia should have been the national one but the rules were bent to let Wembley submit a late bid, making play of the twin towers and then give Wembley the go-ahead only to find that the twin towers no longer feature.

Ho hum, funny game sprting politics.

I believe that it should have been co-hosted by Midland cities. Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds and Liverpool.

I support a bid by London. Can't really comment on the rivalry with the Midland cities. Maybe by then T5 will be built!

David, as a fellow mancunian I understand your viewpoint - and yes its biased there's no denying that! Fact is, we staged the best Commonwealth Games ever in 2002, all the best to London in its bid and I hope you can prove the critics wrong. Also heard today that if London 2012 goes ahead they are gonna use some facilities up in Manc most likely anyway.

You're underestimating London David_itl, the Wembley fiasco was a small blip due to a touch of bureacracy by the FA and the government. A city like London can host any sporting event, there should be no doubts.

Yeah anno Manchester is so hard done by with getting the commonwealth games and champions league final this year. Hate to brake it to use all but the hardest done by city in the UK is Glasgow, Everything goes in favor of Edinburgh. We are basically taxed in the west to benefit the east! We are royally screwed everyday. So others have it worse than Manchester and lets not forget London is in a league of its on in the UK and the only other city in Europe that can match up against it is Paris.

Really? Not even Brussels, Berlin, or Rome?  Wink/being sarcastic

Why don't we give Africa, Asia, or South America a chance? Europe and North America have been hogging the limelight recently...

Africa should probably have it. In the UK, Manchester should probably have it. As it is though, Paris should probably get it, it's generally the nicest city out of the lot. Although, I wonder if there would be an American boycott -- it would be pretty funny!

However....London! British! Rah rah!! etc.

It is likely to be between London and Paris. Germany would have done it well, but inexplicably they chose Leipzig which has blown their chances. New York is a contender, but likely to be passed over due to the Salt Lake City and Atlanta fiascos.

David, the Commonwealth Games were beautifully handled. I am even more pleased that you are so proud to have contributed financially to Manchester City's new stadium.  Big grin

London has an excellent chance. And it is sad, but true, that the IOC are not greatly interested in a bid from anywhere in the UK except London. That might be (well it is, isn't it?) parochial, ignorant and stupid, but if want an Olympics in this country, it is the way things are. Let's hope the government handle things better than they did with the World Cup 2006 bid.
