2012 Olympic Bids

Thu May 15, 2003 9:53 pm

Today the UK government came out in official support of London's bid for the 2012 games. Other official bidders so far are Leipzig, Havana, Madrid and New York. Expected to announce soon are Paris, Moscow, Rio de Janiero and Toronto (depending on allocation of winter games).

Of these which do you think will be successfull ?

Judging by past choices I must conclude that these games will go to North America, or at least NOT Europe due to Europe having hosted many recent summer games (compared to Nth America). A chance for Rio but a poor one.

Also judging by past form a successful bidder must have already failed so I am thinking it will go to Toronto and that it would be a great choice. NY would be quite awful as like London it is over-crowded and far too expensive as it is. I can't believe NYers would really want the games anyway.

Any other bidders I have missed and opinions as to why or why not please.

I was hoping that DC would get them but they lost bid with NYC last fall.

Two out of the last five summer games have gone to the US. Why would another one go there? As for winter games...

Huh? Which country has hosted Olympic Games 4 (FOUR!) times in the past 25 years? (Hint: starts with "U".)

I know Winter games who gives a shit right, but by 2012 the summer games won't have been held in North America (not just USA) for 16 years !

One thing for sure, no way will it be London. That city barely functions as it is, Olympics no thanks.

Winter games are a joke, start your own thread.

Airsickness, how far back do you want to go ? What is significant about 25 years, why not go all the way and see that by 2012 Europe will have had the games 15 times and Nth America only 5. Now who is being greedy ?

I don't personally believe the games should go anywhere in particular, I just am trying to anticipate the IOC voting and the thought processes involved.

PJ, maybe you should just start a thread on how you hate the Winter Olympics?

I prefer the winter games any more because the summer games are so friggin' commercial that it's taken most of the enjoyment out of the Summer Games. The winter games have quite a few sports I like: Hockey, skiing events, like the Downhill, the Slalom, the Super G (I think that's what it's called), and ski jumping. Summer games? Not much there excited me anymore.

Damn...the Syracuse/Rochester/Buffalo bid fell apart for 2012. I was looking forward to kayaking on the Erie Canal.  Sad

Erie Canal, hell, how about kayaking over Niagra Falls!

I think the bid will go to the city who can bribe the IOC members with the best hookers.  Big grin

Funny as hell PacificJourney. Who knew???

JCS, I-90 Committee was racked by scandal as Sorrycuse was caught accepting brides, hence the falling apart of the bid.

Caught accepting brides? What...are we talking arranged marriages here? (heheh)

Anyway, seriously though. Is Cape Town still in the running for the Games? Last time I checked (and that was a while a go), South Africa was still pursuing the Olympics.

I think it would be a wonderful idea for Cape Town to host the Olympics, considering the games have never been to South Africa and I can't remember the last time the Olympic Games were even held on the CONTINENT!

Alright winter games it is then.

Firstly figure skating and secondly figure skating ... need I say more. But of course it is the summer games tainted by crass comercialism.

As for skiing, if you want to go down hill fast try cocaine for breakfast but just stop calling it a sport and keep it of my TV.

About the only things that could be called athletics are speed skating and cross-country. Actually I really like that short-course stuff.

Ice hockey, what they don't have enough competitions for that already ?

All this without mentioning the fact that these things need snow and ice, something which most of the world DOESN'T have. Rich white country sports ... yawn.

The betting is irrelevant here, Jaspike. Patriotic money in the UK will go on the London bid, it is reflection of where the money's going, not who has the best chance. Paris would be favourite in France, New York in the US and so on.

Yes jaspike I've tried skiing. I do live in North Japan, more ski feilds than you would believe.

Yes jaspike I like skiing but that doesn't mean it's a sport, rather a passtime, amusement, whatever you want.

I also like fishing, drinking beer and pleasuring myself but that doesn't mean those things should be an olympic sport !

BTW this thread isn't about this so can we move on please.

I would like to see the Olympic's being held in Africa. It's getting quite boring that the games are mostly in America or Europe.

Yes Arsenal, let's have it so that we can have a demonstration that London is totally unsuitable as a host for events, but the downside being that it will ruin the chances of other British cities bidding for events.

Houston had a very attractive bid put together and we should have won the bid over NY! Such a pitty, now the Astrodome will most likely be torn down.

I have no clue why the North Americans and the Europeans are complaining so much about who should get the olympics between the two continents.

The fact is that the games have never been held in Africa or in South America. These two continents are also part of the world, and we tend to be forgotten about so much.

The 2012 games should go to Cape Town or Rio De Jeneiro. They have been held far too many times in the Northern Hemisphere - it is time for them to come down south!

I don't actually know though why there hasn't been much publicity about the bid for the Olympic Games in South Africa. I haven't seen anything in the media relating to it. However, I think we might have a good chance if we put in the bid. Certainly we have a very good chance for the Soccer World Cup in 2010.

I think Sydney should bid for the 2012 games. People say Sydney is more like America every day - so why not host another olympics five minutes after we hosted the last one. :P

Spread em' around IOC! Time for the Middle East and Africa to have a go!

In the spirit of honesty my support for Toronto springs from knowing someone with a very comfortable couch there. But honestly i think it would be the best palce amongst the American offers. In europe either Paris or Madrid - these cities just function better than London..

Tommy: You read my post about Cape Town, right? Just to let you know, there are some of us up here in the North who are thinking about you folks down there  Big grin .

Is Cape Town capable of handling the Games? I imagine there is a pretty good infrastructure there. It seems pretty much geographically cramped in by the water and the mountains. By the way, despite my being a North American, I totally support SA's bid for the Games. We've had it far too many times and I'd like to see how Africa will get it done. Also, I'm sort of hoping that the Games would call attention to the humanitarian situation on the continent.

How could London really succeed? We've had enough incompetence trying to build stadiums and athletic tracks in recent years.

We need somewhere a bit more organised and calmer like Sweden or Denmark, but I'd love for the less well developed nations like Brazil or South Africa to secure it if they could pull it off........

Thanks for the support. Big grin Glad to know someone still remembers our continent. It's ironic that on a world map, we're in the centre... haha  Smile

I'm very sure Cape Town will be able to handle the event. I'm actually from Johannesburg, and naturally would support my city's bid, but I think if the Olympic Games went to Africa, it should go to Cape Town.

The city really is improving their infrastructure, and I have seen numerous projects underway that show how the city is regenerating itself into..what..a Sydney of Africa.

If the games are awarded to us, there certainly will be enough time to get the city perfect - I'm sure of it.

The sad thing is that I have yet to see any plans in South Africa for hosting the games. It seems to be the last thought on people's minds...  Sad

The 2010 FIFA World Cup, on the other hand... Let's hope we don't get a certain Charles Dempsey on the selection board. Grrrr - the whole country hates that dude; he was the ONLY reason we didn't get the 2006 World Cup. :P

RE: Cape Town,

Are they even bidding for the 2012 Olympics?

It would be nice to see them in Cape Town, but I'm sure that the powers that be would like to see how CPT handles a slightly smaller event, like the World Cup.

I believe Buenos Aires would be the city of choice in South America. Rio has a horrible crime reputation to overcome.

That's the thing - I don't think they have put in a bid. I think this is dissappointing though, because I really believe Cape Town could pull it off very well indeed.

Agree with you about Beunos Aires... they also put in a bid for 2004, remember, along with Cape Town, Athens, I *think* Paris, and forgot which other city. Can anyone else remember?
