Geneva: Hang On For The G8

Sat May 17, 2003 3:35 pm

As you know, My hometown is where all the G8 leaders are going to land before going off to their meetings in Lausanne and Evian.

Geneva is expecting up to 400,000 protestors to come to Geneva (that doubles the city's population).

The left-leaning Geneva city government refuses to take strong measures like bringing in the army for crowd control.

Insurance companies have already announced that they will not pay for any damage due to the protests. In other words, if you can't move yourself and all your belongings outside of Geneva for a week, you are at risk.

In the newspapers, they are talking about the probability of "losing control" of certain key parts of the city, if protestors make a determined push. These areas mentioned include the airport, the train station, and the Mont-Blanc bridge which is at the heart of the city. Should this happen, the Geneva city government says that they will not resist.

I am getting very worried about this. The pussies in the Geneva government are basically giving an open invitation to every hooligan and "professional" protestor and wrecker that they have a free ride in Geneva, and the only people who will pay for the burnt cars, buildings, shattered glass and spray-painted walls are the local citizens like me.

What they should be doing is bringing in the army, and warning the protestors that anyone seen getting out of hand will be shot at. I am armed, and I intend to do just that to anyone who invades my property (I live quite close to the airport, so I'm probably in a target area.)

Any other Geneva residents here?

Charles

Cfalk.

I hate to say it but it sounds like you may need to take the week off and stay home with that Sig the goverment gave you.

It may be needed.

If there is trouble, I would hope the city leaders wouldn't be leaders for much longer.

Unfortunately, this has happened before. In 1998, there were anti-WTO protests here, and there was a lot of car burnings and other acts of vandalism. One day, the police reacted and knocked some heads, and violence died down, but then the media AND the government viciously condemned the Police's use of force, so the police backed off and violence rose again.

Sometimes this city government really makes me sick.

I think the police and Swiss Gov. should just ignore the media and do what is necessary. Or they will have to spend more money on rebuilding than for security.

Just remember, if you do have to shoot one of those yutzes breaking into your house make sure you drag the body inside before you call the police.

If he/she tries to crawl out, don't let them.

Better self defense case that way.

Charles, don't worry, the protesters have been given a field nearby to protest.
It is located in France, of course, and it is actually an airfield. Pilots there are not too happy with it.

No, the most important thing about the G8 is the following : which will be the best day and place to spot at GVA ?

cheers,

Antoine

Antoine,

that was the original position - the city stated that the protestors would be given an area where they could protest as much as they want, and not interfere with the running of the city. But protest organizers have been talking to the press about how they have no intention of limiting themselves to such harmless protests, and that they have every intention to bring the city to a grinding halt, and to actively prevent the G8 participants from getting to and from the airports, hotels and meeting places.

As far as spotting is concerned, they have already started spreading tarps across the fences and putting all our favorite haunts off-limits. The only spotting that may be possible will be on approach, and a bit away from the airport. And even then it will be somewhat iffy whether you can actually reach those areas.

CFalk,

As a Geneva resident, I fully agree with you. Well, except maybe on the "warning the protestors that anyone seen getting out of hand will be shot at. " I would personally prefer to see them (I mean those breaking, not the peacefully ones) arrested than shot down...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
It will be a real mess, I would love to be out of GVA during the G8, but at least I will make some nice pictures from the office's window... hopefully.
Cfalk, I don't know if you have an airport ID, but I have been confirmed that photos are permitted WITHIN the airport area.

Sad thing is these are the same thugs that were protesting the war in Iraq and demanding "peace" while they themselves engage in regular violence. I want to know who pays for all these dumb kids to travel the world and destroy people's property.

I'll be one of those moving into GVA as part of a new army-detachment to guard some embassies there. Officially, we are not connected with the G8-effort but I'm sure that we will be involved in some way. Guarding installations such as the US embassy, we will definitely be affected...

I've spent the last week together with the other officers of my battalion preparing our involvement at GVA... Planning was always based on 100'000 protestors, so I'm rather surprised to hear that we are now talking about up to 400'000.

I'm interested in the outcome of this, as well as I'm disgusted to hear that the insurances are running scared... I guess the stereotype is true: You're paying all your live, once you use them, they're running scared... Well, what do you expect....

As a spotter, I hope that all measures will be lifted after the G8, would be terrible to "loose" my favorite airport

Best of luck dealing with these fools over in GVA. I think that B757300 summed it up best by saying that these are the people that wanted peace in Iraq but now will be hypocrites.

Anyway, make sure to head over the airport and try and get some shots. I wouldn't be surprised if the United States sends in the 747 and a 757, if not both 747s.

Why do they have these meetings in places like Geneva if they no trouble is going to happen as it is basically the cetre of Europe which means protesters coming from all directions. I can think of plenty of places near me where they wouldn't venture or just plane cant get 400,000 people to. My example being flying the leaders into Glasgow Prestwick airport and fly them out in helicopters to somewhere in the western islands of Scotland or highlands? It would be near on impossible to get any great number there and no where for them to destroy, protest in numbers if they find it and get there and stay camping not being an option because of conditions.

You know, You would have thought that the security people for these functions would have learned something from what happened in Seattle three years ago.

I am curious to see how this works out, I bet that there will be considerably less damage done if the police just keep a distance. I have taken part in some protests (I'm not a violent one) and mst seem to be spurred on by the idea that they are defieing the police.
I personally have to agree with the Geneva city council's desission in this matter. It would get truely hellish if we hadf the swiss millitary patrolling Geneva.

I strongly disagree. If they keep to the areas reserved for the protests, fine, but wanting to take over other parts of the city, and terrorising the locals who fear for their property is little else but low-grade terrorism. I have personally been held hostage by these "peaceful" anti-globalization protesters, and overtly and expressly threatened with destruction of my property. My crime? Driving an american-made car, which they wanted to set fire to. Next to my car was the car of one of the ambassadors to the UN, which they did trash. They held me for an hour, during which I was blockaded in my car, and I told them if I saw as much as a match near the car, I would drive right over the 2 girls who laid down in front of the tires.

I understand that most protesters are not destructive. Fine. But unless I hear about protesters themselves denouncing and testifying against those they see who use the cover of the masses to destroy property, I consider them as accomplices to the crimes. As such denounciations have not been exactly commonplace, I have to categorize all of them as either criminals (a few of them) or potential accomplices to criminals (the rest of them).

I can pretty much guarantee that these protests will not go by without such terrorism going on. I've seen them before.

Many of these people just seem to be anti-anything and out for some fun(we all like smashing things up ,deep down or maybe just me?..) I doubt many actually know much about the cause their 'leaders' are espousing.

I wouldn't get too worried for the G8. LAst year in Calgary there were reports of shitloads of Protestors to come.. Protestors did come but they were in the few thousands and all were on the peaceful side.
Not to mention most couldnt get to the mountains.

For Geneva, protestors will mainly base there, if this Lusanne is a big enuf place, then some protestors may try to go there but IM sure security will make a huge 6km guard radius surrounding the location of the leaders.

I wonder if the African guys will also arrive.
Note: Rememeber to be at the Airport 1 day before the actual event.
Start spotting about 1 week before the entire summit to check out the military movements consisting of multiple C-5's and Il-76's.

Overall, the G8 should be fun and interesting rather than violent and out of control. If thngs went well in Calgary, im sure in Geneva it will go just as well if not better.
