Terrible news - I don't suppose that Colin Powell was supposed to visit the city in the near future?

And this, I guess, goes to show that it's nearly impossible to win a war against terror. At least not until you take it a bit more serious (Like, actually trying to find OBL & friends). Or at least look like you're making an effort.

CPH-R, it is possible to win the war but Bush has took absoluttely wrong approach. WHat he needs to understand that (unlike what some Japanese animators claims) there is no such organisation as "Terror" which is here just to cause trouble to the USA/conquer the world. Word "Terrorism" could be reffered to many different groups, each with their own goals and means of seeking them. Some of terrorist organisations are friendly to each other, some are fighting each other. To destroy one or few terrorist organizations is perfectly possible. To destroy all of them is not. However to save a country from terror attacks is also perfectly possible, even without destroying all the world's terrorism.

BTW, finding OBL wouldn't help in my opinion - I doubt he has any real power (except respect from certain people) left by now. Of course, attacking such countries as Iraq also will not help - it'll just help certain terror organizations to recruit new members and certain others to be built from scratch.

Yeah, that's what I meant. With the current approach to the words "Terror" and "Terroists", it will be impossible to defeat one organisation, let alone more than a few cells of that organisation.

The only way to get rid of terroism, as far as I know, is to enlighten people. Let them know that the Koran does not promises 50-odd virgins, a permanent space in heaven etc., but that it preaches peace and tolerance towards other religions. Only when their religion is attacked, and only then, does the Koran preaches that a true muslim should defend himself. And then, only against the agressor. By attacking 2 dominantly muslim countries, it has really given the bad mullah's some weight behind their words, when they say that the US is out to wipe Islam off the face of the earth.

Yeah, finding OBL won't help much, but it will send a symbolic message to his followers. That is, of course, only the case if the US will give him a free and fair trial. Not that I think they won't, but just listening to a few right-wingers in here makes me think that that won't be the case. I mean, there's no thing to stop Dubya's people from inventing a new definition of a person, that will place him outside any treaties etc. Just like the guys who are still at Gitmo.

But the war on terrorism is working, fools. Iraq and the WMDs was more important than preventing further terror attacks.

I am no fan of George Bush, I did not support the US-led invasion of Iraq, and I have serious doubts about this Administration's ability to transform Iraq into a viable, "democratic" nation because the pretext under which Mr. Bush seems to approach the matter is naive, poorly thought out, and ultimately, his clumsy record on so many issues does not guarantee peace and stability in Iraq.

However, I also have no sympathy for those who commit crimes against humanity, who kill innocent people brutally and systematically, utilizing a dangerous mix of religion and violence as an excuse. It is my hope that those who perpetrate, finance, and abet Al Qaida and any other Islamic terrorist organization be systematically, methodically, and efficiently captured, tortured, humiliated, and marginalized. I also fear for the vast majority of the followers of Islam who do not support this barbaric, criminal activity that has been brought upon the world by hijacking their religion. As more terrorist acts are committed, will the rest of the world turn its back on the Middle East, or perhaps take dubious and questionnable governments like those in Syria, Iran, and Saudi Arabia and simply carve these out into "spheres of influence" for the developed world to take on and exploit for its needs? It may sound crazy but terrorism may bring on exactly what it is fighting against. I know people who have suffered immeasurable loss from 9/11. Therefore, it is my hope that those who bring about such violence suffer eternal pain.

The problem with the efficiently captured, tortured, humiliated, and marginalized is that once you even think about doing that, you are no better than they are. Sure, in the beginning, it's all you really want to do, but if you start removing the civil rights that generations have fought for, and which I believe GWB and his political partners is currently doing their utmost to remove, you really haven't got the right to call you a democracy. It will also bring on more trouble.

Because if you're going to torture them, then the news will be broken at one point, and then those who have conspired against the US and other countries, will only have one way of avoiding torture and humiliation. And that is to use their own body as a bomb.
