"The Boy From Oz" Play/musical?

Mon May 19, 2003 12:45 pm

Well, it sounds like a musical anyway.

This is a new play slated to begin in NY in the fall. Has anyone ever heard of it? Has it ever been performed elsewhere?

"The Boy From OZ" was an enormously successful Australian musical when it toured in (I think) 1999. It is all about the life of one of Australia's most famous and brilliant songwriters. He was married to Liza Minelli for a while (despite the fact that he was a homosexual) and also wrote the theme song for Qantas! (I still call Australia Home). He tragically died in the 80s from AIDS. He has written many many many other world famous songs in his time and the musical is simply an extravaganza. I believe that this is the first Australian musical to play on Broadway. It will star an Australia - Hugh Jackman who is probably best known to American audiences from his role as "Wolverine" in "X-men" and it's sequel.

My only advice - BUY TICKETS. Brilliant show.

Just don't expect kangaroos and Paul Hogan (hurrah)

Qantasforever do you realise you wrote all that without mentioning "Peter Allen"?

I remember back in 1999 a Brisbane Scale Modeller modelled a 767 in a ficticious "Boy from Oz" scheme :

I was fortunate enough to see the "Boy from OZ" in Sydney where it premiered in Australia. It was a fantastic show with an excellent cast. Todd McKenney played the lead in Australia and was brilliant. I rate the show very highly and put it on a par with Phantom, Les Mis and Chicago. Maybe I am biased though being an Australian and having the Qantas theme featured. It brought a tear to my eye let me tell you when they belted it out.

If you like the theatre you must check it out. I will be in New York in September this year arriving on QF107. Will it be playing at this time? How will I get tickets? Can I buy over the internet?

Ke? To quote an ugly Australian "Please explain". My experience of Shakespeare was too long ago for me to remember.

"More matter and less art!!"

The line was in Hamlet when Polonius (friend to the king and queen) was telling the queen about Hamlet's madness. He tells it in such an excitable way that he skipps a few details. Hence the queens reply: "More matter and less art".

Ooooeeersssss.

I *loath* "I still call Australia home."

No offence to the great man Peter Allen, who was brilliant but after Qantas saturated the time around the Sydney 2000 Olympics with that awful TV / Radio add campagn with the kiddies in it - whenever I hear it I cringe and want to projectile vomit!

It truly was overdone in such a very big way.

But go and see the 'Boy From Oz' it was brilliant!
