I think Saddam Hussien, Stalin, Hitler etc... are good examples of the phrase. Not Tony Blair.

As far as I get it, it means that higher powers (called "Gods" here, but might as well be "fortune" or alike) follow a certain strategy to "destroy" someone. They don't oppress that person, but give them power and might so he/she can ease into it. When that's been done to a certain extent, read: when he/she has started to use those powers in an incorrect way, the higher powers take away all the powers and joyfully watch the person's demise.

As for Galaxy 5's examples, here's my € 0,02:

Saddam - partly agreed, he's not yet dead (or is he?), so he's not yet "destroyed"

Stalin - If he had been murdered, condemned and cursed by his own people, I could agree with that example. But millions of Russians were desperate when he died, and "destruction" took place mainly in western public.

Hitler - direct hit

Blair - agreed, he's definitely not a good example; he's got no powers but authorities
Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.

All it is saying before GOD brings a person down, he gives them power. In the US, we do that all the time. We will take a person and make them the greatest thing since sliced bread. After a bit, we rip them down like no ones business.

Hm.......good examples and explanations from all of you, appreciated.

I've f**ked up one of my assessments so for this one there's no chance for me to get shit marks.

Anyways, thanks a lot.
