Egyptologists Discovers Mummy!

Mon Jun 09, 2003 10:02 pm

91 years after archaeologists unearthed a limestone bust of Queen Nefertiti in 1912, a British Egyptologist now claims to have found the mummy of this ancient beauty from Egypt's 18th dynasty.

Nefertiti is the wife of the controversial pharaoh Akhenaten (1353-1336BC), and step-mother to the most famous pharaoh of all, Tutankhamun. The mummy was found in a secret side chamber in tomb KV35 in the Valley of the Kings.

This discovery could be the biggest archeological milestone since the finding of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.

Is this connected somehow to Discovery channels discovery of "a second door" in a pyramid?  Smile

The discovery channel funded the effort that could have found Nefertiti. There will be a 2 hour show on it August 17th.

Nefertiti's husband was the one who was really hated, due to the fact he changed the religion to worship of just one god (the sun god). Nefertiti was hated y association is anything. She actually presided over many of the ceremonies and such that the pharaoh did as well, which was very unheard of back then. If I remember correctly, after her death, priests had moved her body to another location in order to preserve it from the looters and plunderer's.

ISTR Nefertiti supported her husband's changes, and stuck with them even after his death, so it's probably not just association.

As well as being Akhnaton's wife, I think Nefertiti was also his cousin or half-sister? On the side of Akhnaton's mother, whom Akhnaton supposedly also got jiggy with...

Although, yes, Amenhotep / Akhnaton was the focus for most of the anger. I guess that helps explain why his successor (who definitely married his father's daughter, and was probably also his father's brother in addition to being a son and son-in-law) was so popular despite doing very little other than maintain the old ways.

I read about it in time. A darn shame that looters had to go in and smash the mummies. They probably thought some cool, expensive gold item was inside the chest cavity!
