HOW To Start Own Website?

Thu Jun 12, 2003 1:07 pm

Can anyone help on this topic? I need info for a website I would like to start for a band, or help them start. I need info for how much does it cost or how do I get one made. Any help would be great.

You can view my prices there - I charge incredibly cheap prices, sometimes I think I'm stupid for going that low. I can get you started if you'd like.

Indeed best to go with a professional unless it's a personal homepage.
But do take care, there are a lot of companies out there that will not give you adequate service if you're a small customer.

I've encountered it myself, a webdesign firm with several large accounts we hired to design and build the corporate website (apart from the dynamic stuff).
All they did was make a pretty picture of what it would look like, the HTML they provided was nothing more than an empty page with that picture as the background...

Also, whoever you choose to help you build the website, make sure to write up a contract of work. Include exactly what work will be done, how much it will cost, and about how long it will take. Otherwise, as Jwenting said, you can get screwed over.

Hm, I'm definitely more expensive than Shawn Patrick.  Big grin
You should start with a concept and work closely together with the professional on this:

Who are your "clients"?
How old are they?

What's the goal of your webpage?
- First and foremost: This ...
- Then comes ...
- Then this ....
- ....

and so on.

Some ideas to attract visitors:
- Ecards: Electronic postcards. People will visit your website to pick up a card send by a friend and in return post some more.
- Mixing desk: Let visitors mix their own version of a song you wrote. They can then invite friends to listen to their "work". The funny thing is: Your music remains to be recognizable. Add some links, such as "Listen to the original version" or "buy the new album here" ...

you could consider doing it yourself. it is much much cheaper than hiing someone to do it for you and would do until your band starts bringing in enough money and the site starts getting enough attention. i've got some links for you.

html - there are many page builders on the web, and you might have one or two already installed. it's not the best, but ms frontpage will do the trick for a simple, first time website. it comes with office and is very easy to use for a beginner. the best (imho) is macromedia's dreamweaver, download the free trial from their site. many completely free web editors are available, have a look round or checkout the links below:

also, to get to learn the basics, try these sites or get a few books from your library.

scripting - you'll probably want some form of forum or guestbook. one of the best places to find anything like this is hotscripts . popular forum software is invision and the range from wwg.

hosting - you are unlikeley to need many features, not much bandwidth and not too much space. never go for a company who promises unlimited bandwidth, they are overselling themselves and will only run into serious problems. i prefer windows hosting (i work best with asp and access) but the choice is your's:

domain name - alot of the time, your host can do this for a reasonable price but one of, if not the, best registrars is godaddy:

more help - need more help, visit two of the web's biggest design communities.

anyway, i gtg. if you need any more help, please do not hesitate to ask.
