Free speech in my house is not permitted unless I specifically request for it.. i.e. turn on the radio, tv, pick up the phone, turn on the computer, etc.

Exactly. How about life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? For me, peace and quiet in my own home is the pursuit of happiness. The telemarketers can look at this as a sort of electronic "so solicitors" sign on your door.

Nasty fines...$11,000 per complaint. Unfortunately 2 million people will lose their jobs over this, but this is what happens when you have a few bad apples give the industry a bad name. I personally turned down two contracts worth $250,000 over these new laws coming into play. Just not worth the risk to the company in case we are given a bad phone list to call. Instead we'll continue on growing our discount ISP business and the outsourced call center portion. At least I won't have to lay anyone off - plenty of work for everyone.  Smile

Um, no actually. LOL. People calling at 11 at night selling garbage is not free speech, it's invasion of privacy. The farther away from me the telemarketers are, the more likely I am to live and enjoy the American dream. They can take their sales pitch and shove it.

Hardly! How can a list that allows someone to remove (optionally) their telephone number from telemarketers call lists a "nail in the coffin of free speech"?

I have a land line, unfortunately I no longer can use it because I no longer answer it because after a while the telemarketers became so bad that nearly every call was from one. I now have to route my calls through my mobile phone which can cost quite a bit come billing time.

I, personally, welcome this list, and hope to be able to use my land line again in the future.

I have my name on the local (Long Island New York) do not call list, and now I just put my name on the national list too. Although it says you are supposed to get a email from them and to click on the link in the email to confirm that you are registered, I have yet to receive that email.

This is a wonderful thing. However, I can't help but think of how long it will take the telemarketing companies to come up with a way around the new law. And yes, I am on the Do Not Call list.

As for the "freedom of speech" comment...the only freedom of speech involved for me, when someone is waking me up out of a sound sleep with a call at 8:30 am, trying to get me to subscribe to a newspaper or sell me something I don't need or want, is the number of swear words I manage to shout into the phone, if I pick it up. I used to subscribe to privacy manager for my telephone line, whereby people ringing from unidentified numbers had to record their names before the call would go through. The feature eliminated telemarking calls almost entirely. My current service provider doesn't offer privacy manager, but the calls are still not coming through. Hopefully, they never will.

On a related subject, I am finding e-mail spam increasingly annoying. I didn't check my e-mail for three days, and had 57 new messages, 40 of which were spam. I can't wait for the "Do Not E-mail" list to become available.  Big grin

Yes, I am also on Colorado No Call List and I don't remember having any telemarketers call me since last October when list went into effect. It is nice to have that peace of mind. Like Dragon-Wings, I have not received an email either, but that's alright, since I'll try again in a few days.

I too cannot wait until there's some kind of regulation on spam - I am sick of it!
