My Bike Got Stolen

Wed Jul 09, 2003 9:38 pm

Today, at about 12:30 GMT my mountain bike was stolen. I went to the newsagents to buy a newspaper (like i usually do) i put my bike to the side INSIDE the shop, went and picked up a newspaper then joined the queue to pay, couldn't see my bike from here.

Finished paying, only to go and find my bike wasn't there anymore, some moron obviously stole it.

Quite angry and bitter right now.

The question is, should i tell the police? I don't know the bikes serial number so i don't know if it's worth it.

Bad luck! Depends if it's insured and how much you liked the bike. I've had three bikes stolen (Bournemouth was a hotspot for that sort of thing) and they were all locked, chained, etc. The third one I loathed, but told the police anyway as doing so was an insurance requirement.

The plod actually found it, so all hopes of a new bike were dashed. I didn't have a serial number for it though. Go figure.

Bad luck indeed. But considering what a good bicycle is worth, and considering what it IS (foot powered transportation), anyone who is willing to risk felony arrest and jail for stealing one, probably needs it more than I do.

However, that being said, that doesn't make it right. There is never, EVER any excuse for stealing (the original Robin Hood was scum who should've been burned at the stake) If the thief is ever caught, you should show him no mercy, and be as ruthless as the law will allow to seek compensatory damages and/or punishment suffered on his part.

The bike wasn't anything to shout about, it was an old mountain bike (5 speed) i bought it years ago, i never thought anybody would want to steal such a old and outdated cycle.
I never got round to writing down the serial number so i don't know how the police could help me in any way, no insurance or anything either.

Oh, and by the way. For demonstrating keen responsibility for allowing your ride to get pilfered inthe first place, it is my duty to announce that

The shop probably has a security camera. Get Plod to have a look or have a look yourself and if you recognise the individual get yourself a nice baseball bat!

I agree with Matt D. I have a car now, so whoever stole my bike can have it and do whatever the hell they want with it. If I need a bike, I have a backup in storage at my Girlfriend's house.

Bike theft is common in Britain, over half a million are stolen every year! As Matt D said, it's not right to steal someone else's property no matter how valuable or invaluable it is.
Anyway, i went back to the shop and told them what happened, they said they'd roll their CCTV footage back and see who the culprit was.

Tell the police your bike was stolen, describe it, give them the serial number if you have it, or does it have any distinctive markings or etchings. Then contact your home owners insurance and file a claim. If its not found or recoverd within about 60 days then your insurance co should re-emburse you for the replacement cost of the bike minus any deductable you have. at least thats how it works here in the U.S. and get a copy of the police report for the insurance co.

It's often not worth it for a bike.
The insurance company will give a deliberately low valuation for it, less a large excess, and will often increase premiums after a claim anyway.

Which makes you wonder why you have insurance anyway...

You did of course LOCK it?

I see so many people just putting their bikes against fences for a few minutes without locking them I have to ask...

If you didn't lock it, you won't get anything from the insurance.

Forget about the police, they'll just toss the paperwork in the round grey archive and go have a cuppa.

Stolen bikes are NOT felonies, as I think the value of the item has be above a certain amount of moeny in value for that, and bikes, I dont think, are they high up.

Certainly file a report. That way, in case you find your bike, or see someoen with it, you can tell the police and they will retrieve it for you. Otherwise they'll ask you why you didnt fill out a report. Just give a brief description to them, along with anything like dscratches or makrs that you know are on your bike.

If the stolen bike is worth over $100.00 it is a felony. Under $100.00, It is a misdemeanor

Have you heard of a chain or lock? LOL j/k Yea I had my bike stolen too. It was the oldest piece of crap ever, but the cops were able to find it. Nothing wrong other than the gears being a little outta wack.
