How Much Does A Car Weigh?

Thu Jul 10, 2003 5:54 pm

Anyone know how much the average car weighs, or where I can find out spec.s for the weights of various cars?
By average I mean average American car, like Ford Taurus, or an import, one of the Japanese makers, but of American size, not the tiny European ones.

Thanks!

Anywhere from 1500 to 5000 pounds. It's very variable.

"not the tiny European ones"

Whats wrong with "tiny European cars" ?. The Japanese make some pretty tiny cars too.

About 70% of people in the world really don't need anything bigger than a tiny car for a majority of it's use anyway.

Anyway most European cars weigh anywhere between 500Kgs and 2000Kgs.

You'd be surprised how heavy the "tiny" European cars weigh. The German cars especially are usually the heaviest cars taking their size into account. You can search different manufacturer websites, you can go to http://www.edmunds.com or other car comparison websites.

In general, I'd say the average car in the United States is roughly 3,000 lbs. Medium sized cars go from 2,800 lbs to 4,000 lbs or so. Small cars can go from the low 2,000 lbs range to over 3,000 lbs. Luxury cars usually go from 3,700 lbs or so to over 5,000 lbs. SUV's are all over the map, but in general, 3,500 lbs to over 6,000 lbs.

From Edmunds.com, here are some car weights for comparison:

2003 VW Jetta TDI GLS 3,009 lbs
2003 VW Passat GLS V6 3,496 lbs
2003 VW Passat W8 3.953 lbs
2003 Ford Crown Victoria 4,057 lbs
2003 Ford Focus Sedan 2,604 lbs
2003 Ford Mustang Coupe GT 3,241 lbs
2003 Ford Taurus SEL 3,244 lbs
2003 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3,118 lbs
2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP 3,583 lbs
2003 Toyota Camry XLE V6 3,362 lbs
2003 BMW 330i Sedan 3,285 lbs
2003 BMW X5 4.4 4,824 lbs
2003 VW Touareg V8 5,300 lbs
2003 Hummer H2 6,400 lbs
2003 Infinity FX45 4,299
2003 GMC Envoy SLT 4,432 lbs
2003 GMC Yukon XL 5,323 lbs

That will be fine for now to compare.

I didn't mean to say there was anything "wrong" with "tiny European cars". While in Europe I rather enjoyed the way people drive, even if the cars were too small for all of my 6'2" to fit comfortably into. I inquired about American cars because, well, the relevance of the material is in America. There aren't many Renaults running around over here.

Thanks for the info., all!
