Virgin And Sir Richard Branson Really That Good?

Sat Jul 12, 2003 12:05 pm

Virgin gets a ton of press all of the time, but is it really a great company? Since it's privately owned you can't look at their financial situation, but in your view is it one of the best companies around?

They really haven't tried to enter the American market, but Virgin Mobile is doing well in the USA.

From my point of view, his successes is because he did something that some oridinary people cannot but want to do. He created his own images which
attracted people to use the Virgin brand.

I seem to remember Virgin cola flying off the shelves in the US.  Big grin Did that happen anywhere else?

Branson appeals to "ordinary" people and they want him to succeed.
Back in the '90s when all the so-called leaders of business and industry were shirking their responsibilities to customers and employers and saying that first consideration in all decisions must be the best interests of shareholders I read an interview with him in Airline magazine (I think) where he was quoted as saying something along the lines of:

Employees are always the most important consideration in business decisions. Do the right thing by your employees and they will look after your customers - and satisfied customers mean that shareholders will prosper.

This is what people want to hear - in Australia Dick Smith, former electronics chain store owner (now owned by Woolworths but still bears his name), former RTW helicopter pilot, former Chairman of the Australian Civil Aviation Authority and currently marketer of Australian owned and manufactured of food products, holds a similar position in people's minds.

But I mean is Virgin a great company?

Is it on par with Shell in the UK, or is it just a lot of media attention.

I'm not sure whether you mean great in the business sense, or from a Virgin customer's point of view.

If the latter, here is what I have to say:

I have flown Virgin Atlantic 2 times now (once to ORD, once to CPT) and have found the overall service to be the best I have ever experienced.

I hooked up to Virgin Mobile here in the UK, and was disappointed. The coverage was dismal, in my experience; I switched to another mobile phone company.

Virgin Megastores generally sell CDs and DVDs at standard retail price, so I see no point in going in to a Megastore when I can buy the same product at half the price on the internet.

So there you go! The airline is great, though the rest seems to be average!

I actually liked Virgin Cola! Add to that the fact that it was cheaper than Coke or Pepsi and better as well. I was slightly saddened when they quit selling it here.

For some balance on all the blizzard of hype, try Tom Boyer's book on Branson, (which he tried to prevent from being published).

The only part of the Virgin group I'll ever have something to do with, is the Virgin Megastore, since it have a lot of Clubbing/compilation CD's - I managed to find all 22 CD's from Global Underground (the best DJ series IMHO) in the Megastore in NY. Normally, they're incredibly hard to come by (especially CD 1 to 10).
