Did You Like Les Miserables?

Sat Aug 02, 2003 7:16 am

I've seen it twice. What a fine piece of a play. Great music, amazing orchestra, outstanding performances. The soundtrack and the DVD after the play was a MUST.

Phantom of the Opera was fine also.

Adios

It was alright I suppose. But I thnk Chicago and the Scarlet Pimpernel were much more impressive.

Well, from the perspective of someone who has actually been in Les Mis, I must say it is one of the best musicals around.

Phantom is of course, the most phenominal play there is (along with Chicago), but if anyone gets the opportunity to see Les Mis or any of the other plays mentioned in this thread - TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY!

Before I panic, burst in hysteria and try to go to Australia... When you say "from the perspective of someone who has...." you mean than YOU HAVE SEEN IT, right? or....?

Has anyone even read the book here??? The book is awesome, at first really hard to read, but as the stories tangle, you start getting the picture, and by the end, it's good.

Les Miserable is a great musical. I've see it six times, three on Broadway three in Philadelphia. I've read the novel twice. The unabridged edition all 1200 and something pages of it. It counld be a better character study. once you realizer that character is the focus of th ebook and not plot you can take a greater interest in it.

Plot is what we are all used to in this fast paced world. But sit back and read this book like you were getting to know these people and suddenly what happens at the end in incredibly moving.

Fly727,

LOL - well, I don't spend all my time on airliners.net. I have been known to sing for my dinner  Big grin

Yes, I have been in the audience but I've also been in the show too.  Smile

Must say - I didn't know we had such avid theatre fans here. Good to see.

I don't know the musical... there's a movie with Depardieu, got it on DVD, it's like 6 hours long, but it's great.

Musicals? I haven't seen that many, only two actually... Phantom of the Opera in London and Grease, which I loved! The film's not that great, but the musical was amazing.

Saw the 10th Anniversary production in Sydney, with David Campbell, who was sensational. The two Australian productions have featured some outstanding lcoal talent (Philip Quast, Anthony Warlow, Debra Byrne and Campbell). A really moving and stirring show, but also with some hilarious moments.

My other great memories in the theatre were the Tokyo production of "Lion King" (although I only understood about two words, as it was in Japanese); Debra Byrne being totally memorable in "Sunset Boulevarde" in Melbourne, which also starred Hugh Jackman. Bit of a leap from Joe to Wolverine! And of course Jill Perryman in the Australian production of Funny Girl.
Cheers

Fly727,

Thank you for your kind words. I played Javert in a local Sydney production of the show about 2 years ago and have performed in various versions of it overseas.

But Phantom will always be my true love  Big grin
