Actually, I always use installed memory times 2 + a little more to be sure.
It can be detrimental to system perfomance if you set your swap file too large--that's more memory to manage.
Also beware of those shareware programs that do useful things that you can find on the net. Those programs are usually poorly written and released without bugs worked out. They can eat all your resources and clutter up places that really shouldn't be there.
Spyware is equally bad, adjust your internet zone settings on ie to at least medium, don't click yes for any of those dialog boxes that tend to pop up from time to time.
Kazaa installs a lot of spyware by the way, if you use that uninstall it, run Adaware and download Kazaa lite.
Go to http://www.pcpitstop.com
and test your pc ther, they will analyze your configuration and give you tips to inprove performance.
And when you run scandisk, run it in safe mode, that will solve your problem.
If all doesn't go well, delete your windows directory and reinstall along with all your programs. Don't do that if you can't back up all your data though.
By the way, I just noticed you only have 64mb of RAM, that's the other side of the problem, look on ebay
and get some more.
