What To Wear?

Mon Aug 04, 2003 7:40 am

I'm going into high school next year, and I don't wanna go in looking like a slob. My basic wardrobe is jeans and a t-shirt. I'm told that I look like I don't give a shit. What should I wear to make myself look better? (and possibly get some ladies!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

I may be oversimplifying the process a bit here, but start with this:
Don't wear jeans and t-shirts!

Sounds overly sarcastic, but avoid those racks and you'll do good. Get yourself some kakhis, a few button down shirts, a belt or two, and you'll be off to a good start. Try avoiding the department stores alltogether, even if it means more to shop at the designer stores.

Good luck!

Good call YB...Khaki's look a lot nicer than jeans, but if you wear a t-shirt and jeans, make sure they look good. What kinds of t-shirts do you wear? Don't wear a Metallica shirt if you want to pick up babes.

um, for high school? no. do not wear khakis and button down shirts daily. decent jeans and shirts are fine. nicer shirts (ie not ratty old tshirts) are also good. for some inspiration look at http://www.abercrombie.com or http://www.ae.com

khakis and button downs are good for more special occasions - any more than that, and you will look uptight and not at all approachable! just my two cents there  Smile

You can mix khaki's and button downs interchage-ably. I wore a nice t-shirt with khaki shorts, or a button down with jeans. But that was in my highschool days... Things may have changed.

AA61Hvy & 727_Gal,
Thanks, I think my intentions were not exactly clear:

What I was trying to do for Venuscat2 was provide a starting point. Don't wear Khakis and button down shirts every day. Jeans are ok, T shirts are ok, Kakhis are ok, etc. etc. etc., but not every day. Try to mix it up a little bit.

727_Gal I have to agree with you on this one. Going to High Skool in upper class LA you have to be quite fashionable here!! It tends to be very important for everyone here - unfortunately!! (especially with the girls!! my gf and x-gf are soooo into it, its like their life!! many spoiled girls here i guess haha).

Venuscat2 - just wear what you feel comfortable with! The girls should like you for who you are and not just for what you wear. But perhaps you may want to get some new outfits for your high skool debut!

good luck

the problem i have with the abercrombie, billabong, and those designer clothes is the price. i shop at the sale rack in macy's/dillards. i guess i'm not too into fashion to shell out the cash.

also another problem in shopping at those designer stores is that you might find some other people wearing the same shirt that your wearing. i hate that.

having that said, do any of you guys wear mostly designer clothes? if so, from which companies? and how much do you typically pay for each shirt and each kakhi?

I made it through all 4 years of high school wearing cargo pants/shorts and t-shirts. And the occasional khakis/polo shirts when ordered to by various females I know (friends, girlfriends, mom..lol).

SIA_B777 - i see your point! The pricing for many designer clothes can be a problem for many kids who find it unaffordable. At times, i find the pricing to be quite exaggerating, but teenagers tend to pay up!!

I personally prefer abercrombie & fitch. The chicks working at their stores are just so hot!! I also enjoy wearing quiksilver, puma, billabong, diesel, AE, to name a few!

Khakis and a nice t shirt or a 3 buttoned polo-type shirt. Don't make the shirts excessively large either. Don't wear jeans and a white t shirt unless the white shirt is completely plain like an undershirt or something.

Who cares? I wear shorts and a t-shirt, and it's not a problem, if you don't want to look like a slob, clean and wash your shirts and pants, and don't wear many worn out or faded shirts. Don't spend your money on designer clothes, chicks don't look at clothes, rather what's under them  Big thumbs up

I second Vafi88's notion. I made it through high school without ever wearing anything with a brand name on it. Black jeans/shorts and black t-shirts are my wardrobe. Ebay, independent stores and concerts is where I buy my clothing. High School doesn't really matter anyway.

All these posts are bringing up the memories of why I couldn't wait to get out of high school.

You wanna get girls? Clothing has very little to do with it. A guy who is destined to get girls will, and the ones who aren't won't, no matter what they wear. If you like Metallica, wear a metallica shirt and just maybe you'll meet a girl who too likes the band and you can go to their next concert with. If you want to wear Abercrombie, maybe you'll meet a girl (probably high maintenance) who also enjoys spending top dollar on clothes (and will also want YOU to buy it for her). You can wear nice clothes that aren't expensive and people won't know the difference, but you may just want the label.

It really all depends on who you are and the vibe you want to send out. If you are a T-shirt and jeans kind of guy, go with that, or if you want to dress to impress, go with that. And another very important thing, hygiene is just as important. Well groomed hair and clean skin is most important with self-presentation.

And the best part of all this, once you get to college, NO ONE CARES!! Woohoo!
Sometimes I go about in pity for myself and all the while a great wind carries me across the sky.

Being the person who starting this topic.....
About the designer vs. "regular" clothes:

I prefer to wear a mix. I have a couple things from Abercrombie, a few more from AE, and some other stuff from Target and Wal-Mart type stores. The thing I don't like about Abercrombie is that I wear a 36 or 38 waist (probably 38, as I've noticed that their sizes tend to run on the small end) and it's hard to find anything over 34 there.

BTW-I got a nice pair of jeans at AE today for $10. The cashier pissed me off though. She said "Wow! You're a good shopper for a youngster!". Uggghhh
But at Abercrombie, the cashiers don't even crack a smile.

Abercrombie it's nice, but really expensive. Try AE and GAP, they tend to be slightly cheaper.

Do you have an outlet near home? You will definitely get awesome deals in great quality clothes. If in Texas try San Marcos (near San Antonio) and Katy Mills (Houston).

At college, I practiclaly wear the smae thing everyday. If its warm, I wear a white or gray t-shirt and blue jeans with a blue hat. I keep it simple. girls still like me, they tlak to me as I walk past and its no big deal.

School is not a fashion show. Make sure you grades are decent and then worry abotu getting laid, as if you graduate, you wont be getting laid for a LONG time after that.

To look nice, I recommend figuring out what colors look good on you. try stuff out. But dont try to look preppy if you personality doesnt actually fit it.

You dcan't go wrong with a basic sweater in cooler weather. Woen love a nice sweater.

But agian, being yourslef is most important. Keep it simple. If you act like youre trying to impress someone, then they will know it. Your clothes need to fit your personality more than they fit your body.

Remember: Your fashion statements need to be something you would actually SAY. You know?

Cheers

Your clothes need to fit your personality more than they fit your body.

Phil is right. It is VERY noticeable when someone who is not preppy, tries to be. The same goes for other styles; skater, punk, etc.

I am preppy, so I'll tell you what I'd do. I have no idea about these other styles. Go to the GAP or their sister company Old Navy. Both have very nice things. If you are willing to dish out top dollar, I recommend Banana Republic. Find something nice. Some stylish jeans, or khakis. A collared shirt always looks nice and can be worn tucked in or out. A store such as Aldo or Transit would be good for shoes. I find that shoes without laces, where you simply slip your foot in are always nice.

As stated earlier, hygiene and cleanliness are very important. You can be dressed in these nice expensive clothes but you may still look like a slob if you neglect yourself. Ensure that you have a stylish haircut. That afro thing that is quite popular looks horrendous, so stay away from that. That shag is just as bad. Short and sweet is the way to go, but avoid the army cut. If you are planning on having such a cut, make sure that you keep it up. I know acne is a big problem for teens, so if you are one of the many that do have it, I recommend proactiv solution. This actually works, and works well. From an inside source (a female friend of mine) I'm told its a big turnoff when guys have nasty hands. I understand that you can't really change your hands, but you can keep them looking decent by ensuring that your fingernails are always trimmed and clean.

I'm not sure if any of what I wrote pertains to you, but if it does, hopefully you can use it as a guideline.

I usually like to stay kinda passive in these matters, but the guy above raised a point about keeping your hairstyle in line. I second this, I think the single most point about appearance in these kinds of settings is how your head looks. When I got to the 8th grade, my brother took me shopping and told me to keep my head clean whatever it takes. If your hair is short, keep it that way, never let it grow scraggly, get a cut every couple of days if you have to.

Contrary to what Emirates says, an afro can be made presentable, depends on the texture of your hair and what you put in it. If you want a more traditional kind of hairstyle make sure your brush isn't far away and you have a little bit of spray or gel. You don't have to turn into a pretty boy, but try not to have a scraggly beard either. Trim it up or shave it off.

On the other hand, some guys have that unkempt look, and it fits them, if you are one of those cool, but unkemptness might let you take a hit when you want to get a job.

Make sure you don't stink either, deodorant is sufficient for some, but you might want to invest in some Old Spice spray or Axe, costs like $3 a bottle, they will never know the difference.

To save money you can go to a dept. store and buy no name short sleeves and the rest, and you can find some killer deals on plain t-shirts off eBay. You may want to find a couple of brand name jeans, but you can go the same here, just depends on the look you want for yourself. Just relax and let your tastes loose.

I'm 31 years old so I really don't have a clue about what to wear in highschool, but what I always did was wore whatever the hell I wanted. Still do as a matter of fact. However, it might make a difference what type of school you are attending.

Don't buy brand name stuff, get shirts of bands you ike, or those shirts with sayings on them (no matter how anooying they get) like above posts state, it's just hygene! The fact that your shirts are clean and not torn are a must, keep your hair clean, don't be one of those skater people who grows it out and doesn't wash it for months at a time.

I tend to prefer the laid-back, yet sophisticated look... ie)nice jeans or kahki's, a nice shirt (can be long sleeve thin shirt), and lace-less slip-on leather shoes (polished black with the shine! - women love shoes lol). A simple yet affective way of dressing-up without going all the way is to wear kahki's with a nice blue dress-shirt (tucked in)and a white shirt underneath with the top 3 buttons undone. Golf shirts work well, and collared t-shirts. Just avoid the whole "preppy" look by NOT wearing Polo sweater with a dress-shirt underneath  Smile I'm not a big-fan of Hawaiian shirts either, especially if they're the wrong colors. Make sure to wear clothes that fit your body... none of this buying clothes that are 3 sizes to big, it looks retarded imo.

As for appearance : hair tends to look its best when it's short. Shave if ya have to, get a good sun-tan, and wear a good cologne. I like Armani's Aqua di Gio, so that's what I use. Anything else is optional... ie) sun-glasses, watch, gold/silver chain, etc.

High-School shouldn't be a fashion show, but let's be honest... the better you dress, the better you feel. (ie : being more confident). Choose a good style, and change it around a little for some variety. Oh, and another item to avoid - soccer jersey's... I can understand wearing them if you're actually playing, otherwise they're just down right TACKY.

"the better you dress, the better you feel"...I don't think that's the best thing to say. I'm very confident, have had many girls come after me, and I don't dress to impress.

everyone in my school has the same clothes. I'm serious.

So what I do is have my dad get me some of his clients business t-shirts, the Union's he represents gave him t-shirts and I throw them on and go to school. Or I make my own using Photoshop, a good printer, and transfer paper. It's cool. Or I go and buy t-shirts from the net and I even go to the Salvation Army.

I feel like this is the best way to go because everyone loves the shirts I have, they are cool and unique.

I also for pants throw on jeans or kakis, or even windpants...you'll learn that dress isn't important in highschool....

I would go for a uni white T-shirt (with preference on too small than too large), a chocoloate brown cord-trouser and brown Camel boots, the perfect mixture between high-style classy and casual.
Keep it simple, but classy!
And of course no worn out things, no rips, no stains, ...!
If you want to look classy and little "higher level" to be honest a look into style and fashion magazines can't be wrong, and I don't mean teenie hip-hop magazines, but "real" magazines like wallpaper* or others in that range.
