But as soon as the French live it will probably return to what it was like before their arrival when the Paraguyan UN peace keepers had to take shelter themselves!

Very decent of you to post this, N79969. Whoever it was who said "French military victory" is an oxymoron last night (although I don't recall they were intelligent enough to use the word 'oxymoron') should read this.
fly Saha Air 707s daily from Tehran's downtown Mehrabad to Mashhad, Kish Island and Ahwaz

Not sure I would call this a "military victory" -- A modern military halts a bunch of tribesmen with machetes and light arms fire? I doubt you're gonna see parades back home...on second thought, maybe they will!

Hamfist,
I do not see why the they shouldn't call it a victory, as you Americans often did when you beat a bunch of tribesmen with bows and arrows think they were called American Indians.

Well, that's a great weapon for the French. All they need to do is record helicopters, then play the recording back toward tribesmen through a high-quality PA system. Instant French victory.

So, this is what a French victory is. Well it turned out better than what could have happened i suppose. Dont get me wrong it is a good thing that they stopped a massacre but come on, how can you call this a great military victory.

The bottom line is that these guys stopped the senseless killing of defenseless people at risk to themselves. That is an unequivocally good thing that is worthy of praise.

Whether they were professional soldiers, an anti-terror unit, or even a bunch of guys with rented helicopters and some hunting rifles, it does not matter. That is the way I am viewing it.

At least we won.

Which is more then the rifle armed British Army did at Isandlwana, in Natal against a sword and spear armed Zulu Army.

C'mon, you can do better than that! I guess you glanced over the "modern military" portion of my statement? However...if in a subliminal way, you are comparing contemporary French military capability to that of colonial America, I might be inclined to accept that! Big grin

Now, about "the evil white man taking the natives' land" sad song you seem to be tuning up for...that's a whole other thread! And if you decide to start that one, be sure you tell me which notable nations don't have a history of conflict over territory.
