Meeting People From The Internet

Thu Aug 07, 2003 10:25 am

Hey guys,

Curious as to what you think about meeting people / friends from the internet?

I've met a few and have always been under the impression that its not really socially acceptable and I have therefore kept it on the down low about how I know some of my friends. They're great people and I don't look at them any different than anyone else I know, but I'm not sure if thats how all people who I know see it. What are your thoughts?

In 2003, it is more and more common to meet people you originally "met" online. Whether in friends or relationships etc. I do not worry about it at all, because the people I have met online then met in real life have turned out to be good friends. Especially people from this site.

I agree KROC. I guess I mostly mean, I'm a little hesitant (embarassed?) to flat out say "Oh, yes, we met from the internet" when talking to someone about a friend of mine.

Maybe at first, but now a days, "who cares" is my attitude towards it. To each their own. Without the net, I would have missed out on meeting some good people and very good friends.

In general, I won't meet someone in person who I met online.

I've met several people from another (Yahoo) boards. I had some of them to my home for a Kansas City Barbeque. Two of them lived in KC, one flew in from New Jersey, and TxAgKuwait was stationed at Leavenworth, so he came by. I've met a few folks at Southwest headquarters, and I've met another poster in Orlando while I was on vacation and he was down there on business.

My wife and I were fortunate enough to be able to have a delightful supper with Superfly when we were in the SFO area earlier this year. Good evening, great conversation.

I was not able to convert him to the Bush camp, but we disagreed in a very civilized way.

He enjoyed the port at the hotel a lot more than I did (I cannot stand sweet wine); I enjoyed riding in his lavishly-large Lincoln Town Car (with the exceedingly rare factory moon roof).

Sometimes you have to step outside of your comfort zone- say "Howdy" to someone you might just enjoy knowing.

Sccutler:
I was a pleasure meating you and your wife. Thanks for the dinner and I enjoyed taking you two for a ride. After living with a drunk, I can drink just about anything. Big grin

KROC:
It was fun kicking it at SFO last time you were in town.

I've made some good friends here at this site. This is the only website I met other people from. I have a really good time hanging out with Lortab7.5mg (CstarU), An-225, ILUV767 and all the others from the gatherings. I also enjoyed chatting with Sophiemaltese.

I've got a new friend up in YYZ I'd like to meet.

Why does it matter how you first contacted someone? People are still the same.

This is the 21st century. 60 years ago, would you have refused to meet somebody you'd only spoken to on the phone?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Ive met a few a.net users before in person and it turned out to be some great times spotting with them...i have no qualms with it, but I come from the same camp as flyf15 in the sense that Im still at that stage where it seems a little awkward to talk about meeting people from the internet with friends...hopefully it will pass though...

Some people I've met from the internet

Superfly
Brick - Mark Abbott
Tim Samples - Denver photographer
Jay Davis
N737MC - Aaron Mandolesi
Craig Mills - Denver photographer
JeffM - Jeff Miller
Rydawg82 - Ryan Spencer Morgheim, he mostly posts on jp.net

And several other people not from this website. Vafi88 doesn't count, since he's my brother. Big grin

Alex.

I`ve also met a lot of people from here, with some I met frequently now to fly or to go spotting together. It is fun because I don`t know anyone else who is interested in aviation except the people I know from a.net.

True, you get some weird looks from people when you say you met someone from the internet. Still, that was an interesting time spotting, Greg. So KROC when are you coming to Florida?

Meeting A.net users is always fun, sometimes all this faceless conversation can be awkward. Maybe we need yet another photo thread.

I don't think there is anything wrong with meeting people we converse with on a regular basis. After all, we do share the same interests! "AIRCRAFT"

I think there is a get together on Aug 16th or 17th at YYZ?? I'm not 100% sure of the date but I hope that I can attend! Big thumbs up

What harm can it do? And for those who feel a litttle shy or whatever...always remember that you don't judge a book by its' cover!

There is one person in particular that I'm sure I'll run into one day!

Have met some internet people over the last years, and mind the internet think is not very old down here (which just gived me an idea for another thread..) ..

Specifically from a.net I met Propfreak and speedbird244, but I knew both before a.net... so I guess it doesn´t count.

Yeah, the only thing you were dissapointed with was the fact I wasnt gay.

I've met quite a few a.net users and picture contributors, everyone has been okay... Hopefully, KROC will get off his candy ass and make it down here for tour stop number 32...hell, its not like Crapchester will be getting one anytime soon.

I dont think I could meet a romantic interest online, too wierd, too many odd people on the internet. I mean, take Neil Robertson for example...

I met my wife on the internet. We have been happily married for all of eight months now. I do get some strange looks occasionally when I mention how we met. Someone even had the nerve to call my wife (she's from Mexico) a "mail-order bride"! Now, that's rude!

For people who are a bit shy, chatting and e-mailing on the internet is a great way to get to know someone. Of course, you need to be cautious and a little skeptical until you really get to know the person.

The last time I was with somebody who I met offline was, err, 1994.

Specifically, I met both my long-term exes via a BBS that still includes most of my close friends. They were both great people - otherwise I wouldn't have chosen to live with them for so long (and get engaged to one) - but clearly neither was Miss Right, because they're not in my life any more. Oh well...  Insane

Still looking for somebody special, and the Internet is as good a way as any.

Of course there are some odd people online; but odd people are out there in real life too.

Just met Kappas13 at an aviation camp (ACE Camp 2003, New Hampshire) along with other people who view a.net.
