Fri Aug 08, 2003 8:07 am

My debut was back in 1996, but I was sort off surfing on BBS since 1994.

I started reading newsgroups in 1993, as part of a class project. I started using text-only websites (via Mosaic/Lynx) in 1994. It wasn't until 1996 that I discovered full-color, image-containing websites and started to "surf."

1993. I also remember bitnet, hytelnet, and gopher. (bonus points to anyone else who remembers them, even more if you know what 'bitnet' actually stands for). Before that I was on Prodigy (remember the cool 4 colors?) from about 1991 or 1992 through 1993.

Oh the pains of downloading with a 2400 baud modem (for the youngeons that is about 1 / 600th the speed of a T1 or a typical Cable / DSL's fastest speed).

Fall 1995, that was the year the library @ college installed their first internet access computers, for "research purposes only". The had them in the computer labs in the library before that, but I never really was interest then, because usually you'd only get use of a computer for about an hour (I was typing research papers) or so before they'd kick you off, so I never really became an addict until Fall 1995.

I started surfing the 'net back in 1996. The first website I visited, besides the library's homepage, was airbus.com. Big grin

I got my first "internet" access in 1993, a Datex-J account. I had access to the WWW since 1994 after a friend showed how much more possibilites the internet had over the limited Datex service.

When Prodigy provided internet access, that was my first time on the net. I believe this was around 1993 or 1994. I also think Prodigy was the first major ISP, as they provided net access before AOL, Compuserve, or any of the other big brands did. I also used gopher, telnet, ftp, and a few unix based applications. I frequented BBS systems from 1989 until the Internet was more widely used. I even ran a BBS during the first Gulf War.
