Windows XP Virus Help

Thu Aug 14, 2003 9:56 pm

Hi guys,

Knowing that there are several IT specialists here I'm hoping for some answers.

I've got a little problem with the computer virus which has been on the news over the past couple of days. Nothing really nasty, but about 5 minutes after you log on, a window pops us saying that your system will reboot in one minute.

There is a patch for this on the Windows Update site. But on the infected PC, it has an old-fashioned analog modem and there is no time to download the patch before the reboot happens.

I have 2 PCs at home - the one that I am using now, which is constantly updated and has all the patches, and the other one which is infected, which only gets used occasionally.

My question: Is there a way I can download the patch on this computer, put it on a CD-ROM, and run it on the other PC? I expect this will take a whole lot less time and would allow the patch to slip in before the reboot happens.

Can anyone tell me how to do this?

Thanks,

Charles

Having encountered the same problem two days ago, I can assure you from my personal experience that you can do that. The file is less than 1 Mb, so it fits on a floppy disk without any problem.

I'll repost the link (works only for English versions of XP, but you'll find it easily on microsoft server if you have a foreign version)

http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/ms03-026.asp

Hope this helps.

If you want to thank me, well, I've got a few unscreened pictures in the queue, so... a direct accept would be cool  Wink/being sarcastic

Lovsan loves you.

Ok here we go:

As soon as the window "Windows is gonna shut down in XX seconds" pops up, click on Start, then Run (Don't know the exact English names.), type "shutdown -a" and click on OK. Now your computer won't shutdown.

Now download this tool:

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixBlast.exe

Download the tool and execute it. It will remove the virus from your computer.

Now you need to download the fix from Microsoft:

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en.

If you have Windows XP, download: "Blaster Worm: Critical Security Patch for Windows XP". Make sure to select the correct language.

if you have Windows 2000, download: "Blaster Worm: Critical Security Patch for Windows 2000". Correct language, as above.

Download it and install it.

Now you're fine. However, I would suggest you to use a AntiVirus Program and at least a Personal Firewall. PFs are not the best solution, but they are enough for daily use of the PC in most cases.

You can get a good free virus scanner at http://www.antivir.de.

For an easy-to-use freeware Personal Firewall, go to http://www.zonelabs.com

Hope this helps.

PS: I hate Microsoft. Had to edit this post 3 times until I got the links wrong with their damn asp.

My only recommendation is that you run the Microsoft patch before you run the worm blaster .exe. If you do it the other way around, you risk re-infection before you get the hole plugged.
