Massive Blackouts Hit Eastern US And Canada

Fri Aug 15, 2003 5:42 am

Hey all,

I'm watching CNN and they're reporting massive blackouts in New York city, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto, Ottawa and now parts of Toledo. This seems very suspicous!

This broke just about 30 mins ago so it's not on CNN's website yet.

This is very strange....All those cities power grids couldn't be linked could they?

Hmm. i am curious as to how widespread this REALLY is. The media is making it sound like whole entire states have lost power. But... I'm in New York state, and the power is certainly working here. I guess it is only certain cities within these affected states and provinces.
Next flight.... who knows.

Well, I think most of New York city is out of power, including the 3 airports as well as YYZ. No flights leaving any of these aiports because the Securtiy scanners aren't functioning.

They're saying it looks like the Niagra plant was overloaded and that's what caused the blackouts. All these big cities reliant on this one plant? That's a bit vulnerable don't you think?

That's what I heard on the news - the western US is on one grid, Texas is on its own grid, and the entire eastern US and eastern Canada is on a third. Very wierd how that works, but I'm certainly no expert on the subject...

Okay! Some news from north central NJ..

We lost power at 4:11pm and I just got mine back now at 5:28, however, most of the region is still without power.

THIS IS NOT A TERRORIST ATTACK!
The Niagra-Mohawk power plant was overloaded and shut down, hence the blackouts.

NYC is a mess, and EWR/LGA/JFK all have groundstops.

I live in a suberb of Cleveland, and our power just came back on. Much of the city is still out, though. Only a few 'burbs have power. Hopkins has a ground stop. Also Detroit, Toledo, Toronto, Akron, and New York are without power.

Anyway, the blackouts. I'm watching the Saint right now on my electricity powered TV! God bless the Queen!

WOIO-TV in Cleveland is reporting that the City of Cleveland has 2 hours of water left. Mayor Jane Campbell is reported to have said that the city is facing a possible water crisis. Cleveland Water serves over 1.5 million people. Also Cleveland's "Rapid" System, the commuter rail system in meteo Cleveland is out of service. Also in Sandusky, Ohio (inbetween Cleveland and Toledo), the home of Cedar Point is without power with people trapped on the roller coasters. Roller coasters at Cedar Point are upwards of 300 ft. tall.

I really wonder how the hell that domino effect could be that strong. And I also wonder what kind of (technical?) failure was the reason for all of this.

This is affecting the whole of souteastern Ontario, and the northeastern states... in fact the only reason I can post right now is because I work at a biological supply firm and we have a LOT of -80 degree celcius items that cost mucho dineros, therefore we have a kick A$$ back up system...

... so yes... this is the time to get after all the people living around here... LOL!!!

FlyCMH- Dom Tiberi from WBNS was saying that the bigger coasters' cars weren't at the top (i.e. Top Thrill Dragster). He's there & said there's no power, as you eluded to.

In other positive news, this has shut KROC up.

It doesn't affect me personally, but...I never thought of that!

"I love electricity."

Me too. For example, I used it to power the fan that blew loads of cold air into the house tonight, after my town finally cooled down after weeks. 17,5 degrees now at 01:30 instead of something like 25 to 28.

Well, may I shed some light? Altough I'm certainly not an expert myself be warned!  Laugh out loud

No Quebec and the whole of eastern provinces in Canada still have power.
Funny thing is, Ottawa is just across the bridge in Ontario from where I live, (15 minutes) on the Quebec side, and the whole city of Ottawa is currently in the dark when on our side of the river, the lights didn't even flick for a second. And the worst thing for everybody in this is that our American and Ontario fellows pay at least twice as much If not more for their electricity. Viva Hydro-Québec and our northern hydro-electrical centrals! Big grin

Most of Rochester is without power, but we're on emergency generators at the airport. Flights are hella screwed up. Flights to NYC, DTW, CLE are either 3-4 hours delayed or cancelled.

However the PGA Championship went on unaffected..... I think.

No idea when power is going to be back up. Soon I hope, or I get to toss out 100 dollars in groceries. YAAAAY!

AC just announced it is canceling all flights from YUL to the US (that is going to save them some money...).

Hydro-Québec just said it is ready to sell electricity to those in need. Given the power Hydro-Québec has this time of the year, it means it could probably fill all the needs of everyone at the flip of a switch.

What an incredible sight...most U.S. media outlets are showing Time Square in midtown Manhatten with no lights whatsoever. There are people in the streets taking photos of the lack of light in the entire area. On the whole though, it looks like the city of New York is doing extremely well despite the lack of electricty. In New Jersey they have declared a state of emergency as a precautionary measure. Over in Cleveland, the city is under an emergency curfew from 9:30PM until dawn tomorrow morning. It seems that municipalities served by FirstEnergy in Northern Ohio are the ones affected.

Power went off at Hopkins airport about 415pm-about 45 minutes before I was to clock out, dammit. And, despite the airport brass telling local news they were "open" that was a crock of shit, as the concourses were being cleared out at 815pm for the night.

I guess about 2 minutes before I got home, our power came back on at home, so I don't have to take a much-needed shower in the dark.  Smile

Best of luck to those still in the dark.

Lucklily I spend the summer in RI, and RI is one of the only Northeastern states not to have lost power. So no power loss here, but friends back in CT have lost power (but are gradually regaining it). Pretty serious though (but not for the Ocean state  Smile )

Is this the largest blackout ever in North America? I can't recall any others that would come close. Yeah New York has had a couple, but Toronto, Detroit, Ottawa, Cleveland etc? These are all large cities.

God Bless Hydro-Québec!I guess they super-reinforced everything after they had to rebuild from the Ice Storm.

I'm way up in northern new york at the moment, and I dunno how we didn't lose power. There are tonnes of NiMo hydro dams around here, so maybe it's easy to keep some of the local power around? Anyway, I wonder if this makes me the only guy in new york able to post on airliners.net tonight.  Smile

P.S. Governor Pataki just said I should watch my power, so I guess I'll turn off my lights and my printer, but I ain't givin' up the computer!

Watching the News, seems like New Yorkers are out partying it up in the Big Apple. Good for them, as I'm sure they are relieved that this is not a terrorist attack, I know I am. But, don't you think the US is EXTREMELY vulnerable to an attack while all this power is off?
