The Premiership - Comparison Player By Player

Fri Aug 15, 2003 6:30 pm

The 5 contenders this season are widely expected to be Man Utd, Arsenal, Newcastle, Chelsea and Liverpool. So as I am bored I decided to do a comparison of the teams player-by-player, to create a definitive starting XI.

Goalkeepers - Got to be Cudicini. Howard and Lehmann are untested, Dudek is prone to errors and Given is decent enough but not in Cudicini's league.

WINNER - CARLO CUDICINI

Left Back - By a whisker Wayne Bridge. As a Saints fan I had the priviledge of watching him last season and he is a much better defender than Ashley Cole (and he isn't a dirty bastard either which is a bonus). Riise blows hot and cold, Silvestre is solid and Andy Griffin is still young.

WINNER - WAYNE BRIDGE

Centrte Backs - Very easy this - it has got to be Sol Campbell and Rio Ferdinand. Hypia is a close third, John Terry is very overrated and isn't in the same league as the other three and like Jonathan Woodgate should be doing time at her Majesty's pleasure at the moment

WINNERS - SOL CAMPBELL/RIO FERDINAND

Right Back - Difficult one this - I'm going for Gary Neville. Glen Johnson looked good this week but is still relatively untested, Jamie Carragher is useless and Lauren tends to go AWOL too often. Neville is a good crosser and is dependable

WINNER - GARY NEVILLE

Left Midfield - spoilt for choice here, but Pires gets the nod over Giggs. Pires has match-changing ability. Duff is a decent player but a bit of a one-trick pony - a decent defence will minimise his impact. Kieron Dyer is again IMHO overrated and Liverpool don't even have a first choice left midfielder

WINNER - ROBERT PIRES

Centre Midfielders - The easiest choice here - Vieira and Scholes by a mile. Vieira is probably the best holding midfielder in the World and Scholes is a terrific attacking midfielder who scores a hatful too. Veron, Cole, Gerrard, Speed and Jenas aren't even close

WINNERS - PATRICK VIEIRA/PAUL SCHOLES

Right Midfield

Now Becks has gone it is more open now, however I go for Harry Kewell due to his goalscoring and assists for Leeds last season.

WINNER - HARRY KEWELL

Strikers - come on boys, it's not even worth discussing this surely! Nobody even gets close to Van Nistelrooy and Henry!

WINNERS - THIERRY HENRY/RUUD VAN NISTELROOY

So our Premiership contenders X1 looks like this;

GK - Carlo Cudicini
LB - Wayne Bridge
CB - Rio Ferdinand
CB - Sol Campbell
RB - Gary Neville
LM - Robert Pires
CM - Patrick Vieira
CM - Paul Scholes
RM - Harry Kewell
CF - Ruud Van Nistelrooy
CF - Thierry Henry

Which gives us 2 Chelsea players, 4 Man Utd Players, 4 Arsenal Players and 1 Liverpool player.

Over to you guys!

No room for John O'Shea? Mind you, it would be difficult to pin him down to a single position. Otherwise that team looks good!

And you'd have Ferdinand or Campbell in the side rather than Billy Gallas why?

What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

I'd be interested to see Premiership XI versus Serie A XI and Primera Liga XI.

CUDICINI
BRIDGE
FERDINAND
GALLAS
NEVILLE
KEWELL
VIERA
SCHOLES
PIRES
HENRY
VAN NISTELROOY

BUFFON
CANNAVARO
NESTA
STAM
COUTO
ZANETTI
NEDVED
DAVIDS
ZAMBROTTA
SHEVCHENKO
DEL PIERO

CANIZARES
PUYOL
HELGUERA
AYALA
ROBERTO CARLOS
FIGO
BECKHAM
AIMAR
ZIDANE
RAUL
RONALDO

Who would win?

Well the Spanish Liga is the best followed by the English Premiership and then the Italian league. The Italian side is weaker up front than the others - Del Piero's not the player he was, ditto Shevchenko

CHIRSBA777ER, I would agree with your ELP side, but replace Ferdinand with either Terry or Campbell.

Serie A side, there is no way I am going to have Couto in my side (drug cheat) I would reconfigure the back 4 into...

Buffon
Thuram
Nesta
Cannavaro
Zanetti

Also replace Davids with Gattuso and replace Shevchenko with Vieri (part Aussie, brought up in Sydney, childhood hero was Allan Border!)

With the La Liga side,

Instead of Helguera I would put Marquez and instead of Aimar, I would put Valeron (personal fav).

That La Liga side is pretty tough, would win plenty of games, and could be counted on to take more dives than Jacques Cousteau.

CHRISBA777: Why the hell did you take Shevchenko? And what about Vieri, scoring 24 goals in about as many games? Shevchenko has scored a lot in his first Serie A season but since then has scored less in every season. Yeah, he had injuries, but anyway.
I like you picking Del Piero, Nedved and the other Juve players, cause if I'm fan of a football club than it's Juventus Turin.

What's the matter with Rivaldo and AC Milan, did they really buy him to have a nice name on the bench or what???

BTW, did you see that young guy, Ronaldo (not the one with Real...) plaing for Benfica Lissabon against ManU. Impressed me and it seems he impressed Sir Alec as well, he's with ManU already... I wonder what he's gonna do...

David itl, O'Shea? In the same game, he played pretty poor, he's not bad but doesn't belong into Premiership XI, IMO

Spanish league is strongest then the Italian then its basically a toss up with Germany and England. Ask uefa!

spanish leauges dream team is Valencia back for plus goalkeper and real madrid front 5 plus roberto carlos if he is a defensive player.

That be the unsobel force and the emovable object that team could not be beat.

Bullsh*t is the Italian league stronger than the English. When is the last time a top English team lost to an Italian team in Europe (Newcastle doesn't count as a top team - I mean Man Utd or Arsenal). Spanish league is definitely top. In Germany, Bayern are very strong but the other teams are second rate.
