And The Winner Of The Browns QB Derby Is...

Mon Aug 18, 2003 7:08 am

Kelly Holcomb.

Butch Davis just announced that Holcomb will be the Browns starting QB for the regular season. I was pretty neutral on this issue, but with Couch being the incumbent starter, I really thought Holcomb would have to outplay Couch in the worst way to be given the starting job. He didn't do that, in my estimation, so I just think Davis was trying to silence the "fans"-those who don't know jack about football who have been screaming for Couch's head for a year now.

You hear it here first-Holcomb, over a 16 game schedule will be no better or no worse than Couch has been.

Either way, Go Browns!

Where is B-Shakey? He might want to update his prediction forecast for the Brown's this year.  Big grin

The prediction on the Browns, KROC, as far as I'm concerned, doesn't depend on who the Quarterback is. It depends solely on the defense, which, so far, has looked pathetic in the preseason.

Yeah that may be Alpha 1, but you know I am referring to B-Shake's year pick that the Brown's are going to win the Super Bowl that year.

I predict that the Brown's won't even get a sniff of the playoff's this year.

You heard it here first.  Big grin

You'd know about teams not getting a sniff of the playoffs, since you root for the Mutts....errrrrr, the Mets.  Big grin

As an Indians Fan, I know you are not throwing that stone Alpha 1!  Big grin

Anyway, I bet the Bills will have a better record than the Browns this year.

I can throw that stone, KROC, because EVERYONE knew the Indians would suck this year-the Mutts thought they could contend.

Given the nature of quarterbacking in the NFL, Couch will get plenty of reps. It's just real rare that the starter lasts very long due to the violent nature of the game.

Heres an even more intriguing question; who's going to be taking the snaps for the Cowboys this season? I am a casual Giants fan, but Dallas sports radio has really piqued my interest on this issue to the point where I watch parts of their preseason games. In my opinion, Quincy Carter will be the starter, and Tony Romo will be the backup, Sterner will be third string, and Hutchinson will be cut from the roster. Dallas has too weak of an offensive line for Hutchinson to sit in the pocket and wait for his recievers to become open. Carter has some mobility, but his accuracy, quite frankly, sucks.

Heres a bold prediction for you, within the next 3-4 years, Tony Romo will be the next Kurt Warner. He's pretty damn impressive in the pocket, and has some great accuracy. He just needs to become much more adjusted to the NFL game, as he is used to playing at Southern Illinois.

Alpha 1. The Mets are contending.......just not for the Eastern Division.

The Seahawks couldn't beat their practice squad, so there is no reason to think they will be in the Super Bowl this year, much less the playoff's.

Dallas? Who cares? The best part about Dallas this year has been Shockey calling Bill Parcell's a homo (no offense AA61hvy). I do think Carter will get the starting job, but The Tuna's ability to turn around teams in 2 years might come to an abrupt end here.

I was rooting for Holcomb all along and am happy he's going to get a chance. He seems to have more heart for the game than Couch, especially considering how much Couch is paid for his results.

I don't know. I don't recall the Cowboy's packing up and leaving for another city with a new team name.

There's an old saying AA61hvy: "What have you done for me lately". South America's Team hasn't done much of anything. At least the Browns made the playoffs last year.

If its what have you done for me lately? I'll take just the Super Bowls the Cowboys won in the 90's alone over the Browns part II 2003 Playoff run.

Mike Phipps?

One of the the more disasterous trades the Browns ever made was in 1970 or '71, I think. Mike Phipps was an All-American, "Can't Miss" Quaterback from Purdue. With the ageless (and kneeless) wonder, Bill Nelson, literally on his last leg, the Browns desperately wanted a young quarterback. So they traded wide receiver Paul Warfield to the Miami Dolphins for the Dolphins #1 pick. The Browns took Phipps, who was immobile, couldn't read any defenses, and had a substandard arm. Warfield went on to help the Dolphins to 2 Super Bowl Championships, and now is in the HOF.

Phipps did have a few decent years in the later 70's with 'Da Bears, but nothing to justify giving up a Hall of Famer. It's right up there with the Indians trade of Rocky Colavito in 1961 as all-time bonehead trades for Cleveland teams.

Cowboys are in re-building since Aikman left, especially after Emmit left.. The Browns have been in rebuilding since I was born.

Before you were born, AA61hvy, the Browns won more NFL Championships than the Cowboys still have achieved. Think about that, son.

In fact the Browns are the only NFL team I can think of that won the NFL Championship in their first season in the league, not counting the first year the league was in existence.

And you call yourself a sports fan, KROC? The Browns won the NFL Championship in their first season in the NFL in 1950, after winning all 4 All American Football Championships between 1946 (The Steelers, 49ers and Browns merged into the NFL in 1950). The Browns won Titles in 1954, 1955 and 1964, and made the Championship games in 1951, 52, 53, 56, and 57.

Browns Quarterback Otto Graham played with the Browns from 1946 until 1956, and played in a title game EVERY SEASON he quarterbacked the Browns. The Browns also played for the NFL title in 1965, and has made either the NFL or the AFC Championship game since the Super Bowls started, 6 times. That's a pretty successful franchise, if you ask me.

And, of course, the REAL Browns won the Super Bowl a few years ago, disguised in Purple and Black.  Smile

The NFL after teh merger there sports almanac. Nobody cares about 1950. Unless of course yuor team hasn't won anything since the merger.

Oh, and the REAL Browns.....yeah, that would be the Baltimore Ravens. Maybe if Cleveland could have kept them, they could have won.

KROC, if you want to whine about it "not counting" go ahead, but I think the good in Green Bay would get on your case, too. It counts, sure as any other championship counts. You may not care, and I may not care that you don't care, but it's as legit as any Super Bowl title won by the Dallas Cowboys-or anyone lost by the Buffalo Bills.

1.) I'm not glossing my team as some past power, so leave the Bills out of it.

2.) Lighten the hell up. I'm just yanking your chain because you are so easy to get worked up. Ultimately I'm not taking anything away from the old time teams, titles, etc.

Sure you are, KROC-you said it didn't count. And I wasn't making fun of the Bills-getting to 4 SuperBowls is fantastic, but so is getting to 10 Professional title games in a row. It deserves every bit it's spot as any team post-merger.

Are you reading imparied? I was JUST YANKING YOUR CHAIN, which would lead one to believe, in this case you, that I was bullshitting about the pre-merger Browns titles. Especially since my last statement in my post above says that.

Hey, Josh: You saw what I saw in Romo. That guy's got something and hopefully he'll unseat Stoerner as the 3rd QB. I really can't tell how Parcells feels about CHutch. He may not make up his mind until after Thursday night's game.
