Who Is Going To The IAA?

Sun Sep 07, 2003 2:26 am

Next tuesday the IAA 2003, the world's biggest car fair, opens it doors. This year it will the biggest numbers of new-car presentations ever. And what presentations!

Think of the Mercedes SLR, the Porsche Carrera GT, the Bugatty Veyron 16.4, the Mercedes SL65 AMG etc. etc.

I'll be there next saturday and next sunday.

Is anyone else going there?

How much is the entrance fee? Maybe I'm coming because I'm very interested to see the new VW Golf.

It's 15€, a fair deal imho considering how huge it is. But almost anyone in the automobile business can get discounted tickets, I paid 10€ for mine through a friend who's working for Opel.

I'll certainly be there, but I guess I'll go during the week, which is quite easy for me as I literally work across the street Big grin

I get offered free tickets from Mercedes every year. Took that offer once, went there and hated it. Too many people on a too small space, bad air, sweating smelly people, the attractive new cars sieged by the masses, overpriced "gastronomy" and parking, traffic chaos... no thanks.

Sounds exactly like my last visit at the ILA in Berlin but without the mentioned "bad air" because it was an outdoor event  Big thumbs up.

By the way, 15 EUR entrance fee is not too much.

Not to forget way too many self-proclaimed experts who make themselves heard whether you want to hear it or not, people shoving you aside to get the last promo booklet of cars they'll never buy, in clothes that last saw water during the rain last winter eying you suspiciously when walking around in a suit etc etc etc.......

In whole a mess, a complete mess, but well...I have to...

>>>I get offered free tickets from Mercedes every year.

Every two years I should have said. Man, time seems to be on fast forward, I can´t believe the last IAA was more than one year ago...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Another reason not to go there: half of the show is dedicated to tuners, car-radio systems or the newest technology in tyres...

>>>people [...] eying you suspiciously when walking around in a suit

I did an internship in the Bundestag in 2000 during the time when the big Berlin auto show was hosted (forgot the name, AAA?) Our office got some free VIP tickets, valid on the day prior to the actual opening - that was neat: free food everywhere (real food, not just a currywurst), free champagne (not just sparkling wine), nice press booklets with large format high gloss photo prints, and, above all, nobody "eying you suspiciously when walking around in a suit "  Smile/happy/getting dizzy .

Plus it was of course so empty, I was chauffeured around the offroad parcours twice in a row, once on a G and once on an M Class - just for the heck of it and just for the sake of comparison (no queues or anything) - try doing that on the IAA Big grin

Patrick, if you intend to go there after the 18th, you might consider coming down to MA for a couple of hours (spotting at MHG is just great  Laugh out loud ) - 40 minutes from F on the ICE.

AAA, correct!

Problem is, you get eyed suspiciously when walking around amongst the ordinary people...when I enter the booths of the manufacturers or institutions, it's totally ok, they all wear suits (and sometimes white socks to go with it, but that's another story!).
