First Full Week Of College Football: Upsets Galore

Sun Sep 07, 2003 7:15 am

Well, the college football season officially kicked off this week, and a lot of upsets, and one almost-huge upset.

Wake Forest rolled over NC State, who had to be looking past Wake to the showdown vs. Ohio State Next week.

Boston College destroyed Penn State. I think it's time for Joe Pa to hang them up in Happy Valley.

At "press time" Georgia Tech was killing Auburn, who seems vastly over-rated right now. (Kudo's to B747-437B's team).

And my alma Mater, Bowling Green, knocked off #20 Purdue in West Lafayetter 27-26!!! GO FALCONS!!  Big thumbs up It was their first win over a Top 25 team since 1972. Good bet they'll be 3-0 going into the game at Ohio State in two weeks, which, by the way, I got tickets for.  Big thumbs up

And San Diego State should have beaten Ohio State, who looked past them to NC State. The defending champs looked horrendous, but came away with a win.

And I hate to say it, Sean, but the Georgia Bulldogs look like a title contender this year.  Smile

Tonight, the marquee game: Florida at Miami. Go Gators! (take that, KROC).

Other college pigskin comments are welcome.

Its Boston College. They are supposed to be a very good team this season and Penn St. was ranked #25, so I wouldnt exactly consider it a huge upset in any sense of the word.

For a while I've thought Joe Pa needed to retire. One of those guys who should have retired before his teams got really bad.

All of us LSU fans aren't feeling sorry for Auburn.

The Ole Miss/Memphis game was compelling, especially considering both QB's come from New Orleans (Eli Manning from Newman HS, Wimprine from John Curtis HS).

I'll take Miami in tonight's game with Florida. Another Lousiana thrower at QB in this one, Brock Berlin for Florida.

Washington State looks like they're choking one away. I never was big on the candleburners, err...domers, err...Notre Dame. Especially being originally from SoCal, and growing up with the USC/ND rivalry.

HAHAHA. Well, KROC, I'm no big fan of the Gators, or any Florida team, but it's a mtter of a lesser of two evils in my mind, and I'd like to see the 'Canes get pounded.

If it makes you feel better, I think they'll win by 17 points.

I can accept that Alpha 1. Thing is, thanks to Butch Davis, and the continuation of Larry Coker, Miami probably has the cleanest program in the state, so I hardly would say they are the greatest evil.....unlike the current Cheateyes .....

Oh, I agree with you about Davis and Coker cleaning up The Penetentiary Big grin But I still have never liked them, back to the days where they wore the fatigues ,and all that shit. I just think they're too cocky. That kind of cockiness isn't a Midwest trait.  Smile

By they way, no props for my Falcons?  Big thumbs up

Cockiness? Uhm, Mo-C? Huh?

And you can't judge the current Hurricanes on past Hurrigangstas run by Jimmy J and D. Erickson. They are the old regime, and My man Butch (Clevelands best) and Coach Coker restored true pride. Not like say Bobby Bowden.....

And yes, big props to Bowling Green for the win!

But on a side note, thanks for nothing to your Indians. Swept by the Tigers? Way to go C-Town. The '62 Mets are now sweating bulletts for what seamed like a sure thing.

We all know that the most crooked program in FLA is @ Free Shoes U. How Bobby Bowden's been able to keep his nose clean as well as he has is a great mystery.

As for the North Avenue Trade School upsetting the War Chickens, hey Chan Gailey can't lose them all.

I glad I don't bet on football as my Dawgs failed to cover the spread v. MTSU. A win is a win no matter by how much.

Tech's defense looked excellent and they sacked Auburn's QB 7 or 8 times and only allowed them 40 yards. Auburn coundn't stopp making penalites. Reggie Ball played damn well for an 18 year old starting QB. Auburns is way overrated. Tech needs to start focusing next week for FSU.

Texas' result against New Mexico State was not much of a surprise, though NMS gave 'em a scare at the start.

The fun thing was Vince Young's debut as no. 2 QB; that dude can RUN, and I mean, like greased lightning. Watch for more!

KROC, the 'Canes don't look as formidable as the were last season, at least so far. MAybe they're losing their touch?  Smile

Come on now, how many first rounders have the 'Canes supplied the NFL the last few years? Like 200 or so?  Big grin Even the best programs have to rebuild which can lead to an off year or a team not as strong as one is used too. I mean OSU wasn't exactly turning heads today. Just one of the College Football things.

my Oregon Ducks won again. Not a big test this week, but in two weeks it's Michagan, and that is when we're going to see what they have. Next week is ASU too I think, that will be a good one as well.

2-0 so far, might finally slip into the top 25 again, we'll see.

Ohhh what's that? Michigan has a combined score of 95-10? Ohio is in 2nd place? Oh no oh no, whatever will they do without Saint Clarett.

Well, you got to give props where they're due: the comeback by the 'Canes shows-again-that they are one of the elite programs in the country. I think they have to be worried, or at least concerned, about the performance of their defense, but thei O came through, and the D did stiffen when it needed to.

Kudo's to those 'Canes.

Alpha 1-

jeez I hate them Canes, but boy oh boy did they put on a clinic by kicking the crap out of Florida. That was an amazing display.

God I hate those Florida teams, but damn, Miami is going to do fine  Sad

I have to put in a shamelss plug for the Main Man at Bowling Green, QB Josh Harris. Harris was 22-of-40 for 357 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. He also ran 19 times for 34 yards. This is a guy who lead the nations in points that could be directly attributed to himself last year, at over 22 points a game. He's a legit pro prospect, at 6'3", 235lbs, can run, and has a gun of an arm. And remember, this wasn't against a panty-waist team-it was against a team that was predicted to be in the hunt for the Big Ten Title.

The MAC is second tier, when put aginst the big guys, but Josh Harris, who has put up unreal numbers for two-plus years now, has got to be a Heisman candidate if he continues to put up numbers like this.

My CU Buffs pulled a squeaker over UCLA 16-14 but didnt really deserve to win...that fake punt attempt was one of the most poorly executed fakes Ive ever seen in my entire life...pathetic (amongst other things)...next week Washington State comes to Boulder...will be an interesting game I think...

I also have to give props to the Hurricanes...that was definitely an amazing comeback!!

GO BUFFS!

The 'Canes had me gripping big time last night, but an impressive win none the less. I mean at least it was Florida and not say San Diego State or something...  Big grin

Oh, and Michigan Fan. I'm a big Wolverine guy as well, but your 95 points have come against 2nd rate schools. Wait till you get a real test first. That being said though, their Running Back is my Heisman Favorite this year. Dude has almost 400 yards on the ground already.

Reggie Ball played damn well for an 18 year old starting QB.

Ain't that the truth. I remember Joe Hamilton as a freshman and he was nowhere near as polished as Reggie Ball appeared yesterday. I don't know if Ball has the same speed and vision that Joe had, but if he has even half as much then he will definitely go places.
