Clarrett Finished As A Buckeye

Tue Sep 09, 2003 8:14 pm

Grambling is about to pick up a great football player, but an asshole as a person.  Smile

Report: OSU won't reinstate Clarett

09/09/03

Bruce Hooley
Plain Dealer Reporter

Columbus- Maurice Clarett might have played his last down with the Buckeyes.

Ohio State will not reinstate the sophomore running back to the football team, WJW Channel 8 reported last night.
Reached at his home by The Plain Dealer last night, OSU Di rector of Ath letics Andy Geiger did not contradict the report.

"Anything they have is premature," said Geiger. Asked to clarify, he said: "We're not going to comment on any aspect of what we are into at this point."

Channel 8 reported that in formulating a response to NCAA allegations against Clarett, the university learned the sophomore "received extra benefits worth thousands of dollars."

OSU's response to the NCAA will say that "the university will not seek reinstatement to the football program for Clarett," WJW Columbus bureau chief John Damschroder reported.

Clarett has not played for OSU this season and is not practicing with the team pending results of investigations by the university.

In April, Clarett reported $800 cash and items worth more than $9,500 stolen from the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo he was driving.

The car and the amount of money involved caught the attention of the NCAA, which asked OSU to investigate.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a shame that it came to this, because Mo is a great talent. But he just learned that the world doesn't revolve around him, and that, despite his talent, he's not above the rules. If this report is accurate, then my hats off to OSU for having the integrity to not let him back into the program. Let's see him win the Heisman at Grambling now.

Of course, all this will probably have the effect of an ice cube on a hot plate with this egotistical young man. His mother and Jim Brown are filling his head with crap about how entitled he is, and he obviously believes it. Parting is a sweet sorrow, I guess, but he has only himself to blame.

Not because I HATE OSU, but they made the right choice in making an example of Clarrett. He broke the rules....several apparently, made false statements about it all etc. Also, I think OSU is doing this as much to cover their ass as well. And how about that Jim Brown. Well done Jim. Thanks for your support. Gotta love when the other infranctions were mentioned, Jimmy Jim says "I wasn't aware of that". Well Done.

I agree that this is a CYA for Ohio State, however, I think that making an example of Clarrett is hopefully the beginning of a trend in college athletics.

Jim Brown needs to stick to low-budget movies! He continues to tarnish his great career as a Brown's running back by backing idiots like this!

This will hurt Ohio State in its quest to repeat as national champs, but well done by them.

Wasn't Jim Brown busted for beating his wife/girlfriends? I don't think anything he does now will further tarnish his image, save killing someone.

Jim Brown earned himself a 6 month bid for his actions. Its kinda like Jesse Jackson coaching Bill Clinton on Marriage Infidelity. Gotta love it.

Grambling is Division 1-AA correct? So he will not have to sit out a year? For some reason, I thought they moved up to 1-A.

Good fucking riddance. This kid had every opportunity to turn it around, and dare I say if it was someone of lesser calibre, they wouldve been off the team about a minute after the alleged rules violations took place. He clearly was not sorry for his actions and clearly his schooling took a back seat to his professional career. This is a case of a kid who thought he was above the NCAA rules and got caught. He deserves everything that comes to him. As for Jim Brown and Jesse Jackson rallying behind Clarett, why am I not surprised? Publicity hounds.

The sad thing is that he was "unlucky" and got caught. I am sure this type of thing continues to run rampant throughout the NCAA, both basketball and football. It is now a business in every shape of the word.

Now, it seems, major collegiate players are using college to just show their goods until they can get to the NFL and NBA. I am glad to see the NFL still has the rule that they will not accept college players before their junior years, although, I am sure with enough pressure, that will change.

It's also being reported that if Clarett is found to have taken these benefits during last season, the Buckeyes could be required to forfeit that national championship they stole in the Fiesta Bowl on that blown call.

http://www.msnbc.com/news/963736.asp?0sl=-10

On Monday, WJW-TV in Cleveland said Ohio State will turn over details of its investigation on Clarett to the NCAA as early as Tuesday, and will not ask for the running back to be reinstated. The report also said the Buckeyes could be forced to forfeit its national championship if it is found that Clarett received benefits before the end of last season.

He won't stay @ Grambling very long, as Clarrett has already hinted that he may challenge the NFL's policy on underclassmen and draft eligibility. He ought to try playing in Canada for a few years just to let the heat die down.

Good....IMO, we don't need him. We've got Michael Jenkins, Lydell Ross, Chris Gamble & the new guy (Carter) to keep us going. Clarett missed part of the season last year & we still went undefeated.

If the benefits were taken during last season & we do lose the National Championship.....Mo had better have his ass as far away from Columbus as he can possibly be.

A few things about this.

A) OSU NEEDED to get rid of Clarrett. If they didn't they would open themselves up to MORE scrutiny that they will be under shortly.

B) Like EA CO AS said don't be surprised to see OSU need to forfeit their National Championship and the NCAA most likely will come down very heavy with sanctions etc. This case is VERY deep and I doubt OSU reported ALL of it to the NCAA.

C) Obviously if this is the case heads will role in the OSU Athletic Department

D) Clarrett has little chance of making it in the NFL. Why? I don't care how good you are in college the statistics are just against you. The NFL stands for Not For Long and if you look at the last person Andy Katamoyer (Spelling?) the awesome Linebacker also from OSU to bitch and moan to the league about how they need to lift their age restrictions, well look how well HE did in the League.

Like it was said earlier all of this is a shame. I bet you 95 percent of the players, coaches, and athletic department personal worked their ass off LEGALLY to get to the Championship game but you have a few screw ups who by them breaking the rules screw over anyone else.

Guys, if you think that the NCAA is going to have OSU forfeit their National Title, you can forget it. The NCAA doesn't want that specter on their table. The fact that OSU threw him off the team, for all intent and purpose, the minute they found out about this, and the fact that it wasn't OSU that violated any NCAA rules, pretty much makes that idea a moot point. Same with sanctions. Sanctions usually come down when the SCHOOL is violating the policies, not an individual, especially if there's no pattern or proof that this behaivior extended to others.

Alpha 1. The Clarrett case is allot deeper than anyone is saying, which is why these 'worst case scenarios' are popping up. Clarrett is gone, because OSU is running damage control, before things get too deep.

Also, the NCAA cannot make OSU forfeit their national title (that they did indeed thieve) but the BCS would have to do it, as the NCAA and BCS are separate entities. That would require another investigation by the BCS, so I'm willing to bet the Cheateyes will get to keep their stolen title.

KROC, when will this bitterness end over the national title game?  Laugh out loud Your 'Canes had their chance to redeem, despite the referee! And they just couldn't get the job done.  Wink/being sarcastic

Either way, I think that since this seems to be limited to one individual-and I guarantee you the media has been snooping around Columbus looking for other angles on this, that there will be either limited, or no sanctions against Ohio State in this Matter. It usually takes a broader pattern of this kind of crap for the NCAA to come down hard on a marquee-any marquee-program. It's a different story if you're a 2nd tier school, as the NCAA feels free to make an example of you-ask Cleveland State and their men's basketball program about that double standard.

I'll be bitter as long as the Luckeyes claim to have "won" the title in 2003, or 02 however it works..

Miami is/was a better team, but they did get outplayed for the most part. I will give OSU that. They played a great game, they took it to the 'Canes, but in the end, they did not win, the ref won the game for OSU.

Maybe they were a better team, but despite your prostestation, the Buckeyes outplayed them the entire game-physically, they beat up Miami the way no one has done in years. Despite the crybaby sob story from my esteemed friend KROC, (  Wink/being sarcastic ) Ohio State earned that title. It was one of those games where neither team deserved to lose, but someone had to.

OSU Losing the national title is a very real possibility. I wasn't clear in my earlier post but let me elaborate.

IF the investigation proves that Clarrett DIDN'T accept the benefits PRIOR to the Championship game AND/OR that he WAS academically eligible to play BUT received improper benefits or was academically ineligible for school AFTER the game the Buckeyes won't need to give back their Championship and most likely will just get a slap on the wrist by the NCAA.

BUT..

IF the investigation proves that Clarrett DID accept the benefits PRIOR to the Championship game AND/OR that he WASN'T academically eligible to play then OSU played the game with an ineligible player and WILL be forced to give back the Championship.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter that OSU threw him off the team as soon as they found out about him receiving improper benefits. Also if this is the case don't look for Clarrett to be playing at any NCAA schools. As soon as you accept ANYTHING by these 'agents' you lose your eligibility.

Also the NCAA will take away the championship not the BCS.

As a personal note I would HATE to see this happen. No I am not an OSU fan, but still you work your ass off and then you lose your championship because of mistakes of others sucks.

OSU Losing the national title is a very real possibility.

It's not a possibility at all, since this was not an infraction sanctioned by OSU personnel. It was the actions of one individual, not apparently what happened at Fresno State, with boosters paying multiple athletes, and cases of acedemic fraud.

Dream on, but the National Champion stays in Columbus at least till the end of this year.  Big grin

OSU will not lose their stolen title.

And ALpha 1, how did OSU 'earn' the title, if it was gift wrapped by a ref throwing a flag 5 minutes after the fact? OSU outplayed Miami, but it wasn't good enough to beat them. They needed a horrible call to theive the game ERRRRRRRRRRR win the game.

Damn, Skip Bayless needs to weigh in on this thread as well.  Big grin
