Where You'd Go If U Were Me

Wed Sep 10, 2003 3:00 am

Hi all !
I've just been 18 (since yesterday  Wink/being sarcastic ) and for my birthday I'm planning a one week long trip to "somewhere in the world" with my father... I don't really know where to go and I'm not a big traveller like many of you, and since this forum is full of ppl who spend their life abroad  Wink/being sarcastic so I'm sure you'll be able to tell me more about the following places, and your opinion.
We'd leave somewhen between October 22th and October 27th...
I've thought about the following places:

in Asia:

-Hong Kong. It's been a dream of mine for a long time to go to Hong Kong, but is it true that life is expensive there ? I've also heard that it's not worth spending more than 3 nights there, is it true ? Can u tell me more about HK, do the ppl there speak English and not only chinese ?

in the USA:
-New York: I've also always wanted to go to New York, but hotels are quite expensive there.

-Los Angeles: I've been there when I was younger, I had a great time

-San Francisco

-maybe Chicago

I wished I could add Australia and New Zealand, but the France-NZ and France-Australia are rather expensive...
I'd love to go to Japan too, but it seems that hotels there are very expensive. I've been to Shanghai this summer (what an awesome place...), and now I'd love to go to Beijing but if you don't speak Chinese it's almost impossible to take the bus, ask someone in the street, etc... I guess it's the same in lots of asian cities.
If u have other ideas of great places to visit, please tell me !
thanks a lot.
Clément...

Fly AOM to Cuba.  Smile
It's just you and your dad right?
Cheap hookers, great rum, nice beaches, classic cars, awesome Soviet/Russian airplanes and great spotting at HAV.  Smile
It's very very cheap there.

I would suggest UAE - very modern and clean country and unlike some other countries in region, this is not hard to get in, also safe and has developed infastructure.

The real question is: Where would YOU go if you were ME? And the answer to that question is: Martha's Vinyard. Some friends and I are flying, ahem, rather, I am flying some of my friends there next week in a Cessna 172. Sound cool? I thought so.

I would have to recommend Thailand over Hong Kong - was just there this spring. Its cheap when you arrive, cultured, friendly, adventerous, and relaxing, and not that big of a language barrier. I spent a week in Phuket (many other islands to stay on off the coast - Phuket is the largest and most popular of the islands) on the beach, on Thai safari...you can scuba dive, snorkel, hike, etc....or eat, drink, and be merry. Also spent four days in Bangkok, which is plenty of time.....tons of things to do....its a huge city....an overload to the senses.

Australia is awesome if you could afford to fly there.

I'm from Chicago....great city to visit before winter arrives. You can skip LA...San Fran is beautiful, but you'd have more fun in Chicago or NY at the age of 18.

Let us know what you decide to do.

South Africa? Cape Town perhaps.
Malaysia, maybe?

Los Angeles and San Diego are great (gorgeous weather, fun things to do), NY is too expensive. Chicago might be a bit on the cool side by Oct. 22.

Perhaps Vegas would be a place to spend some fun if you want to go to the states. Though if you do decided to go somewhere else make sure it's a place where you can get a drink as in some (lots?) of the states you have to be 21.

Maybe though you should think of a place where you wouldn't want to go with your mates, the sort of place that you only want to go once to but never the less its on your list. Some of the places mentioned already are the sort of places you want to party at and no matter how close you are with your dad, partying will not be the same with him there.

The drinking age in all of the states is 21 Saintsman...it used to be 18 in many of them but the federal government threatened to take away highway funding if they didnt raise it to 21..this was about 20-25 years ago...

-New York: I've also always wanted to go to New York, but hotels are quite expensive there.

I was in NYC in July and I paid approximately 100 US$ for a double room in the Hotel Pennsylvania, two weeks ago I was there again and I paid approximately 200 US$ for a double room (because of the US Open). The city is a little bit expensive but I like it there.

-Los Angeles: I've been there when I was younger, I had a great time

-San Francisco

California is a great place, I spend my best holidays there and I can't wait to return.

I'd spend some time in Austraillia and New Zealand if I were you.

Forget Sydney. If you've seen one city, you've seen 'em all. Go to the outback, West Coast, and up North. Take a dive on the Barrier Reef.

Do not go to Vegas.

Actually, If I could go anywhere, I'd probably be heading somewhere... Think island. Think south (farther than Martha's Vinyard... WAY farther.)

Go to Australia's Gold Coast. We just had an Australian exchange student from there and it sounds awesome!
