Golf GTI / Audi Le Mans / Mercedes CLS

Wed Sep 10, 2003 5:27 am

Here are 3 new concept cars which have been unveiled at the IAA today:

1. The new Golf GTI

2. The Audi Le Mans Quattro supercar

3. The Mercedes Vision CLS

Nice, especially the Audi and the Mercedes.

I wonder what the "death-racer" propaganda will say 'bout them though  Big grin

Yes the Audi and the Mercedes are especially nice! both of those cars are sweet. Look at that interior on that Mercedes, and the Audi. They both look great! Cheers

That new Mercedes is very nice. Where does it fit in in its current model line-up? It's coupe-like profile with 4-doors is very nice.

Sorry, but I don't like any of them. I'm basically more into understatement than those cars show.

I'm going to have to call that Golf GTI "der Klon"....it looks exactly like a Civic SI...

The Golf and the BEnz look terrible, but the Audi is sweet!

The Volkswagen looks like a Civic; the Audi is sweet, but too aggressive looking for an Audi; and I do NOT like the M-B. It's too rounded at the back, and bland. From what I read of the CLS, it's supposed to be basically a four door CLK. Yuck. I am also confused about why M-B needs another four door sedan. They have the E, the C, the S, why the CLS? What niche is it supposed to fill?
But that was when I ruled the world

The Audi looks radical; The VW looks like what we have here called a Civic Si R; The MB at the rear reminds me of a Buick Century.

There's something about the Golf styling... instead of the Lupo / Polo trying to look like their big brother, now the Golf is returning the favour  Wink/being sarcastic

Thanks for the post..i did hear about the Mercedes CLS but really didnt know what it would look like.......i think the car is hot. From what i read it is supposed to come in between the C and E class but for some reason this car looks bigger then the E....it would make more sense it being a sedan between the E and the S class....but none the less a very desirable car.

The GTI doesn't belong in the same category as you could probably buy 4 of them for the price of one of the others listed with it.

For the price, I find the interior of the GTI to be pretty sweet. The outside looks a tad too econo-boxish...

That Benz is hard. I would so drive that.

Yesterday there was a TV piece on the Audi and the MB. I guess you would be pretty disappointed to drive it:

The Audi, that very car that you see above, cannot go faster than 130km/h, otherwise the chassis would probably be torn off, and the MB has currently driven, or rather rolled marvellous 1.5km on the backyard of the MB facility and only the chief designer is allowed to touch it. Of course, both cars are only show pieces...

Audi CEO has driven the LeMans on the Audi testtrack, with a camera onboard, I really hope, the guy knows more about managing the company than he knows about driving such a car...it looked like what happens in driving lessons for very beginners Big grin

But they look good indeed!!!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

Wow!!! The Audi Le Mans Concept has a 5.0 Liter Twin-Turbo V-10 engine producing around 610 hp at the crank!!! 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds, and we all know how good turbocharged engines are as far as tuning goes!!! I can imagine it being tuned to around 1000 hp at the crank when German tuners such as Sportec or Dahlback get their mits on it. The theoretical top speed is quoted at over 200mph, however an easily removable speed limiter will set the top speed at 155mph. Oh yeah, and like the 911 Turbo, it will have full-time 4WD. Like a Ferrari 360 Modena, it will have a six speed sequential manual gearbox. Please Audi, put this one into production.
Audi is the king of turbocharging, and this just proves it along with the B5 S4, RS4, RS6, R8 LMP900 Le Mans car and the legendary Audi Sport Quattro of the 1980's. As you can see, I am a huge Audi/VW fan, and plan on getting a used B5 S4 or waiting for a 4WD Mk5 GTI 2.0L Turbo to come to 'Merica.

Have a look at the Chrysler Crossfire. A much cheaper version of what the Audi and Benz cars resemble. The Golf? Maybe. But I am a BMW guy, and would wait until the new M6 is out.

Stretch...I'm going with you on this.
Advantage called me last week and wanted to know if I wished to change my deposit over to the Six series....
Rumour has it that it will top out at about 85K, fully loaded...and that's a lot of scratch!
So far, I'm still in the M5 camp..but could easily be swayed once the car is available...

Any chance you'd be looking for a great condition-extremely-low-mile-never-been-kept-outside-or-smoked-in-waxed-monthly-2002 M5???
 Smile

P.S. MB is diluting it's products again, the Vision follows the same styling cues as the Maybach...

Greg: Have you visited BMWtips.com at roadfly? Are you a BMWCCA member? I thought you would trade the old M5 on a new one, not just sell it outright. As for "diluting it's products," BMW will have its chance with the planned 1 series.

Well, the Crossfire is basically a Benz anyway, built to compete with the TT.

just a question : how do you heel-and-toe with that ridiculous accelerator pedal on the GTI ?

I think that pedal actually makes heel and toe a bit easier, just like the way Bimmers designed their pedals. Makes blipping the throttle precisely a lot less hassle.
