Cruise Line Messes Up?

Wed Sep 10, 2003 11:10 am

Someone in my family told me that a recent cruise was set for Bermuda, but due to the Hurricane, they couldn't sail to Bermuda. So supposedly, instead of going to somewhere else warm or refunding the passengers, the cruise line decided to sail the ship up to Maine and then Nova Scotia (sp?) and come back. The cruise lines would not give people refunds, even though instead of going to warm and sunny Bermuda, they were taken North to a cold place.

Anyone have any info on this story? I searched news sites but found nothing, if someone knows, what cruise line was it?

There has to be some 'small print' clause that screws you over if there is bad weather.

There is "small print" that says the cruise line can change itineraries. Since Bermuda closed their ports to all cruise ships, that would be one of the reasons. As far as going to a "warmer" port - most Bermuda cruises are 7 days. Leaving from NYC, you might make it to San Juan before you have to turn back and make it into port in 7 days. So they substituted a Canadian itinerary, where stops could be made. It's sort of like the airlines...if you have to be somewhere Saturday night, but the airport is closed because of weather, they aren't going to be giving any refunds, unless your ticket was refundable to start with.

But they still get screwed though, I sure people brought bathing suits and summer clothes. I don't think you can swim up in the ocean in Canada.

While they may have gotten "screwed", it's a risk one takes when booking a cruise during hurricane season. That risk is offset by a lower price for the cruise.

So true. Thats why I never have and never will take a cruise during hurricane season.
