45th Parallel

Sun Sep 14, 2003 3:01 am

We went to Lincoln City yesterday and crossed the 45th parallel which is half way between the Equator and the North Pole. On most major north-south highways in Oregon, there is a sign pointing it out. Do they have a sign in your country?

They have a big one in Korea. It's called the DMZ and is marked with trenches, minefields, barbed wires, bunkers and about a million soldiers.

I seem to recall when I was a kid (40 years ago, or so) traveling through New Hampshire - they billed themselves "Half way between the north pole and the equator"

...and in North America:

Never heard of it..

I always assumed it was called the 'tropic of cancer/tropic of capricorn' depending on which hemisphere you are in...

I have however, been to the equator over in Kenya  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. The sign says 'Jambo! Equator!' with the elevation etc on it, I have a picture of it somewhere but I can't be bothered to find it Big grin
