Your Favorite Hymn

Mon Sep 15, 2003 2:34 pm

I grew up in a strong Southern Baptist family. Dress up for church every Sunday, get the hell scared out of you by the pastor, then come home for a big family sit down lunch. I also had chapel everyday in school. I went to a private Episcopal school in Oklahoma City K-12. Over the years I've come to learn a lot of hymns. Now that I don't go to church that much anymore, I've taken to downloading Christian music...

My favorites:

1. How Great Thou Art
2. Seek Ye First (We sang this at school with one side of the chapel singing one part while the other sides sings the hallelujahs)
3. Our God is an Awesome God
4. This is the Air I Breathe
5. I Love You Lord, and I Lift My Voice

Love the newer praise songs that are so popular, but there's one called "Trading My Sorrows" that really gets me.

Why is it that National Anthems and patriotic songs are in most Christian hymnals?

Well, it depends on how you define "hymn."

Traditional hymns:
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Christ the Lord is Risen Today
Holy, Holy, Holy
We Gather Together
Come, Ye Thankful People
For the Beauty of the Earth
Glorious Things of Thee Have Spoken

Contemporary:
When in Our Music God is Glorified
Sometimes by Step (usually only the chorus is sung, "Oh God, you are my God...")
Seek Ye First
Lord, I Lift Your Name on High

"On Eagles Wings", which is usually sung at funerals, but it is a beautiful song.

Ual747 asked "Why is it that National Anthems and patriotic songs are in most Christian hymnals?"

I would submit that, in America, because the country was founded on Judeo-Christian values, it is only a natural expression when patriotic music is included in the hymnals, irrespective of the actual denomination or church. One will note, too, that conversely, the recognition of a Deity is also expressed in many governmental venues (although, this of course, is being fought against in some areas)...Jack

"Master the Tempest is Raging"
"Abide with me"
"Lead, Kindly Light"
"A Mighty Fortress is our God"
"The Morning Breaks"
"There is a Green Hill Far Away"
"Nearer, My God to Thee"
"Brightly Beams our Father's Mercy"

Those are just a few...

There is, in my opinion, no more beautiful song than "Amazing Grace." And not the version performed by Janice Joplin.

Personally, I deplore organized religion however, my two favorite hymns have to be:

On Eagles Wings
Amazing Grace (versions that are absolute favorites are the bagpipes version from Braveheart, the version by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones and the acapella version by Rockapella).

Freight Dogs Anonymous - O.O.T.S.K.  Smokin cool
DAMN! This SUCKS! I just had to go to the next higher age bracket in my profile! :-(

Two of the tunes that I used for my Mom's funeral that we both liked were "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" and "Hymn to Joy" (Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee -> from B's 9th symph)

Amazing Grace

It Is Well With My Soul

Lord of the Dance (apparently it's Methodist and not in the Baptist hymnal)

I'll Fly Away (I can't believe the current Baptist hymnal has dropped this old standard)

Come Just As You Are

(choir songs)
God's Choir

The King Is Coming (unfortunately out of print, this one is POWERFUL)

Best marching band song ever:
Amazing Grace first song (just tones, no words), by a choir, then played on the field by the IUP Marching Band. It sends shivers up and down my spine to hear The Beast of the East at full roar.

And the patriotic songs are in there because they're sometimes sung at church. I can remember singing stuff like America the Beautiful and such in church.

My favourites:

1. "We Have An Anchor" - Priscilla Owens

2. "To God Be The Glory" - Fanny J. Crosby

3. "There Is A Green Hill Far Away" - Cecil Alexander

4. "Eternal Father, Strong To Save" - William Whiting (original) ... but I prefer the aviator wording, as sung at the funerals in the movie "The Right Stuff"

The 1985 movie "The Trip To Bountiful" is well-known for having many traditional hymns in its soundtrack.

"Here I Am, Lord" is my all time favorite hymn.

I tend to prefer the contemporary praise & worship music over hymns, though. My favorite p&w songs are:

Trading My Sorrows, Breathe, God of Wonders, Take Me Higher and Renew.
