Mel Gibson's New Movie

Sun Sep 21, 2003 4:59 am

Anyone here planning to watch the new Mel Gibson flim The Passion.

Sounds really interesting. But I read articles on th einternet about protests and complains. Anyone know what's up with that? Sounds like a good movie.
It is a piece of religious history.

While I welcome Mel Gibson and anybody else who feels inspired to make a religious movie, I have no interest in watching a film that is based on Catholic liturgy.

David b.

I agree, it sounds very interesting, I'm definately going to watch it.

I have no interest in watching a film that is based on Catholic liturgy.

It has nothing to do with Catholicism. It's a movie based on one of the major religions of the world, and it's figure head Jesus Christ. Let's just leave it at that...

Sorry, but I'm not going to leave it at that. Gibson is representing the movie as the accurate portrayl of Jesus' last days, but theologians from across the religious spectrum have weighed in on this. And they say this movie is tied to more closely to Roman Catholic beliefs than on the gospels.

If you want to see it, be my guest. I have no interest in attending cathechism.

Read the first post. "Anyone here planning...?"

I said "no" and explained why. What's the problem?

The problem is that you stated seeing the movie is like "attending cathechism."

If I see any previews and It looks good to me, I'll go see it. I could care less if it has a religious theme.

...and what I've read about it tells me that it's a didactic movie which preaches catholic doctrine. Is that not cathechism?

I know some over-sensitive idiots have piped up and claimed it's anti-semitic but I seriously doubt that it is. If it happens to show Judaism in a bad light then that's one thing, if it's done deliberately then that's quite another. I suspect that at worst, this film is the former. Plus it sounds really interesting, I think a lot of research and study has been done, I mean the whole thing's in Amareic (sp?) for god's sake. In fact literally for god's sake, he (or she) is the only one who'll understand what the hell's going on.

Please. I take it you don't watch the Discovery Channel either?

It's a movie. It tells a story. You watch it. You don't make it part of your life. Simple.

Feel free to watch it. I'm not interested. Why all the fuss?

Marco, would you mind seeing the movie and then giving me a complete written English translation?

Thanks,

Matt

Kidding ofcourse. But it is amazing how they are providing no subtitles or anything.

Did he find a US distributor yet (I know 20th Century Fox back out)? If not, he might consider adding subtitles to make it more commercially viable.

I saw the trailer and it looks disturbing...but it DOES have Monica Bellucci!

The big fuss is that Gibson has made a film that purportedly reflects his pre-Vatican II belief system, and while making the film refused to entertain new evidence about the historical Jesus that Biblical scholars have unearthed. Apparently it also fails to make distinctions between "good Jews" and "bad Jews." Well, according to its critics, at least.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating I guess. So, I do intend to see it. I remember that many gay rights organizations made a big fuss that "BraveHeart" was homophobic. As a gay man, I have to disagree with that assertion. "BraveHeart" was lots of gore, and a lotta fun !

So how bad can the Gibson "Jesus" movie truly be? No worse than those gaudy technicolor Cecil B. DeMille extravaganzas. Which were enjoyable even if you didn't personally prescribe to the religious convictions held dear in the film.

Well I sincerely hope those critics are wrong, I've been called "Christ killer" enough this year without having to worry about people seeing a movie that would make that situation worse.

Instead of takin the word from scholars, critics and the like, how about just going and seeing the movie for yourself to see what it is really about.

Jaysit - why did people say Braveheart was homophobic?
