James Dean: Superstar Of The 50's

Mon Sep 22, 2003 12:52 pm

I saw the film Rebel Without a Cause for the first time a few weeks ago on Fox and it's amazing how good an actor Dean was. This was the first James Dean movie i have seen and it was pretty good. Dean was the epitome of cool and probably the most famous well known actor in history. Even today 48 years after his death there is still a James Dean run where fans in replica Porsche Spyders retrace the route he took that fateful day back in '55 to the accident location near Paso Robles. Fairmount even has a James Dean museum i think, would be cool to see. So what does everyone else think about this actor and his movies?

cheers

Well, James Dean MIGHT have developed into a terrific (or great) actor, but, your statement; "...probably the most famous well known actor in history." NOT! As a matter of fact, I personally think he was overated and arguably just on a training mission during his demise. I also think that his untimely death contributed more to his "fame" than his at-the-time acting portfolio. Can you name four or five other movies he was so "well known for" without thumbing through his bio? Thought not...Jack

I agree about his untimely death boosting his fame. Only made 3 films- well that's just it. How many other actors can you name who only made 3 films and were idolized as much as him? NONE. He's been compared to Brando and some say he was even better. But yeah if he didn't die so young he probably wouldn't have been as popular as he became. The whole JD idolization started after his car crash. But all 3 of his films got very good appraisals.
