Conservatives have decided that fees and charges are a bad idea?

Ooh, it only took them a decade to realise their mistake...

USAFHummer - the tuition is usually abou £15,000 per year, but students only have to contribute a maximum of £3000. Accomodation depends on which city the university is in, but usually it is reasonably cheap. It used to be the case that all tuition was free, plus students were given a grant each year to pay for living expenses, but this changed about 3 years ago

I thought the fees in England were means tested, people with low incomes paying very little?

That is correct Teehan.
No wonder that a lot of UK unis lack the finances they require.

Per year, for entry in 2004, it is £1 098 for the first year, increasing slightly every year from then on.

£1 098 is US$1813.68

USAFHummer - yes that's right the government pays. Which in itself is probably a little unfair as those taxes come from many people who never go to university (can't say I'm complaining as I benefitted from that money but still its unfair). To be honest, there are now too many students at university who do lame courses that contribute nothing to society. I think the university system should go back to being very selective overall, not just the top 20 Unis that take high calibre students and then the rest that are a waste of time IMHO. Then the tax burden would go down and the added competition for places would mean only the best going to university. That's the point of university anyway, to get the future leaders of society. Nothing is gained by subsidising someone to waste 3 years of their life getting drunk whilst 'studying' Media Studies. It's pointless.
