Wisdom Teeth And Jaw Pains

Sun Sep 28, 2003 11:38 pm

If there are any dentists around (it being Sunday and all all of the offices are closed), I was wondering if it is normal to have really bad jaw pains when your wisdom teeth start to break out of the gums. I got X-Rays taken in May, and all four of mine are not impacting at all. However, 2 days ago I noticed that one of them has started to break the gums to come out, and whenever I move my jaw I have severe pains. Is that cause to worry?

Periodically, when my wisdom teeth were coming out, my gums and jaw back in that area would hurt a lot. It would come and go.. I subsequently got them pulled.

Pain is normal, but if you personally think it's worse than it should be, you can call your dentist's exchange, and they'll get in touch with your dentist (he/she will call you back). If not, call him/her on monday.

Hey Olympic,

I'm not a dentist but I do know that new, incoming teeth can offset the balance of the jaw thus causing pain. I believe it is sometimes called "TMJ". When you refer to jaw pain are you experiencing pain at the hinge of the jaw (just below the ears) or is it less localized than that? It is also possible that an impacted wisdom tooth can create an infection, in which case you will more likely experience pain along your jaw, gums and mouth.

In any case, get yourself to a dentist before it becomes worse.

Tooth problems can give you some fairly general symptoms of pain in areas that include the throat, jaw and even ear. Is your pain throbbing or just steady? Throbbing pain can indicate infection or abcess. I'm not a dentist, just a patient with three root canals. LOL. I've never had wisdom tooth problems and probably never will, but as a young child, I was lucky enough to have molars develop with no enamal on them.

Actually the pain is just concentrated on the big muscle at the socket of the jaw when I open my jaw. When I push on the gumline though where the tooth is that hurts too.

When you put pressure on the tooth (bite down a little) does it kind of relieve some of the pain on the tooth? If so, your jaw hinge might be sore from subconscienciously doing this a lot; especially in your sleep.

I have jaw pains periodically as my upper wisdom tooth is pushing out sideways into my cheek. every so often i get tooth ache, cheek ache & jaw ache. I think my teeth move every so often hence the pains, but I decided enough was enough and booked an appointment to have it pulled, November is the earliest i could get on the NHS ( I booked it in May) luckily i've had no pains since but I'm still having it pulled.

Basically, you're a teething teenager. When I started to get my wisdom teeth, as they were breaking through my gums, it hurt. I didn't feel that much jaw pain, but it was really evident if I got a piece of food back there and chomped. Anyway, I had my wisdom teeth removed. Didn't eat anything but tomato soup for a week, and stayed in bed.

I just got back from a visit with my oral surgeon. He took a panoramic x-ray and basically, the tooth that has been bothering me has a slight infection because it cannot push through the gums; additionally, my other 3 wisdom teeth are coming out slightly inclined. I'm going to have all 4 taken out during the Thanksgiving break. Until then, I've been given some pain killers and some medication to clean up the infection...I must say the pain killers are amazing!

When I had my wisdom teeth removed in April 2002, The last thing I remember was falling asleep. I ate nothing but Campbell's Chicken & Stars soup and Chocolate Hot Fudge Shake *probably shouldn't have had that*. IT hurt for about 1.5 weeks, and then I had to have a dry socket packed. That shit tastes NASTY!!!. Good luck dude.

Wisdom tooth eruption (coming through the gum) causes inflammation of the jaw muscle insertion into the lower jaw. This is why it hurts to open your mouth.

You can see a dentist if the pain gets excruciating, and you should definitely see a dentist if you start having high fever, bleeding or pus from the eruption sites. Otherwise, you can probably treat the pain with ibuprofen or aspirin.

Good luck,

So far I had only one wisdom tooth pulled out. I didn't feel any pain during that 2 minutes thing but after the pain killers stopped working I felt the pain for about 10 days. I was taking Talenol and Advil to calm down the pain.
My 3 other wisdom teeth are still under my gums. It didn't hurt when the first one was coming out. I was 25yo at that time and I never had tooth pulled out of my mouth before. I was scared to death. It didn't hurt a bit.

I had 2 of my wisdom teeths pulled out 3 years ago. During the removal, I didn't feel a thing becuase they put me to sleep. About 20 minutes after the procedure was over, I slept like a baby for an hour til the medicine wore off and then the dentist and my mom woke me up. I felt a bit dizzy after from the effects of the IV, so I slept in the car while my mom drove me home. The pain starts the very next day. Once the medicine goes away for good, I started feeling the intense pain with alot of blood coming out, so my mouth was stuffed with gauze pad. About two days after, I went to school, with gauze pads in my mouth, still in pain, so I had to go to the clinic like every hour to get some pain killers and blood all over my mouth. About a week, the pain started to go away..and took about a year to fully heal the gums.

Generally, I'd recommend getting your wisdom teeth removed. I had all four removed at once by an excellent malifaxial (sp?) surgeon. I was put under and the procedure took about 45 minutes. I remember going to sleep and being awakened and being dillusional from all the drugs I was put under. After the novicane wore off I started feeling pain in the back of my mouth which lasted three days. Not only that, two days after that I attempted going into work only to almost faint in the car. Now a couple of months after I still have large cracks in the gums from where the teeth once were.

Also, the biggest concern after getting your wisdom teeth removed is Dry Socket, that is, when the clots that should have turned into new gum tissue get pulled or sucked out of the sockets exposing the bare bone and nerve running through the lower jaw to the open air, which causes considerable jaw pain throughout the lower jaw. Generally you will be perscribed antibiotics if this occurs. A doctor can explain the rest of this better, but that's generally how it goes. Good luck with your teeth Big grin.

[add]: Also, try not to be nervous before the surgery, as it will take increased drugs to knock you out. Just remember, in your case the procedure will probably be very routine and you'll probably be very happy once your wisdom teeth are out.
