Bigphylnyc, when most people say "hate", they're not talking about "hate" in it's purest, evil form; they're talking about an intense dislike, within the areana of sports, where it's about winning games, and losing games. When I say "I hate the Steelers", as a Cleveland Browns fan, it's in the context of wanting to beat the arch rival. I've admired the Steelers over the years, even though I hate to seem them beat the Browns. Same with the Yankees. I "hate" seeing them win all the time, but I admire their professionalism, and how classy most of them are.
If you can separate "hate", as in true loathing, and "hate", meaning you want to see your team kick the other team's collective asses, then I think you'll get it.
