Most Exotic Place You've Visited?

Fri Oct 10, 2003 8:48 am

Hi,
I'd like to know if there are people here that have visited a very exotic country where you do not get to go everyday (i.e. say Saudi Arabia, Mali, Libya, Algeria, Laos....all those and many more).
Also, if you have any stories about interesting situations in that country, e.g. if you were in Iran in 1979 or in Lebanon in 1975 I'd be interested in hearing how your experience was as I can't imagine being in a war zone or revolution.

By the way, to start with, my most exotic place was probably Paraguay  Smile
It was unbelievable how much stuff they smuggle from there to Brazil everyday... Plus, the place was dirty as hell, just like a dump. You could wander through the streets of Ciudad del Este (if you were able to make way through the garbage) and buy anything you wanted from an illegal copy of any CD (there were no legal ones, lol) to a surface-to-air missile and bring it back home. It was just crazy...  Nuts

It would be great to know what do people look as "exotic". I have never been in an "exotic" country. My trips have been to the US and Europe, and also southern Argentina. But as PanAmerican said, Paraguay was exotic for him, but for me it would not be exotic. Why? because it is just 2 hour away by plane from Santiago, where I live. Also, they speak the same language that I speak, and their culture is rather similar to mine (although I am not used to walk through garbage over the streets).

For me, exotic places would be Africa (all of it) and southeast Asia.
I hope I can visit them soon.

For me probably Egypt or Macedonia. It is hard to decide which is more exotic.

Egypt has all that cool history and culture but so does Macedonia. I was in Macedonia in 1993-94

Both are great places that I would love to go back and see again.

Interesting to speculate about what it is that makes a place, "exotic."

I loved my visit to South America (Panama, Peru & Ecuador), especially Quito (and I cannot even say why, it just appealed to me).

It is hard to visit some of the ruins of the once (and so recently, historically) massive Mayan cities in the Yucutan, and not be carried away in daydreaming about the huge and complex culture that once was, and so suddenly and almost completely evaporated.

My expectation for Tahiti and Her Islands was that I'd be blown away, but the reality was more like Kauai on five times the money. Bu I still cherished the opportunity to go there.

Australia was a kick in the buttock region, no friendlier people on the planet, but still not wildly ... exotic.

But, of all the places I have had the privilege to visit, the one place that, every time I woke up and walked outdoors I had to sort of pinch myself and say, "I am really *here*!" was Paris.

So, for me, Paris was the real deal. I suspect I'll feel the same way about Londom whenever the opportunity arises.

It is such a privilege to be alive in this magical time, when such chances exist.

For me it's Taiwan. I'd say my visit to Taiwan was a little more "exotic" than most because I didn't stay in a hotel, nor was I in Taipei. I spent over a month there and a lot of it was in little villages where nobody spoke any english. Also spent a lot of time on the South coast. Very nice non-touristy beaches there.

Man, this thread makes me want to travel!!  Smile

It's a toss up between Myanmar, Cambodia and Chinese Tibet. Probably Chinese Tibet due to the altitude and the wierdness of the people. Thankfully the Chinese are making that place a bit more habitable.

lol, JAL777... I believe Harlem is definetely exotic!

See people, I mean exotic for you. If you think Harlem is exotic, just put it down.
However, I did a search on this and exotic is defined like this:

exotic:
adj.
From another part of the world; foreign: exotic tropical plants in a greenhouse. See Synonyms at foreign.
Intriguingly unusual or different; excitingly strange: “If something can be explained simply, in a familiar way, then it is best to avoid more exotic explanations” (Chet Raymo). See Synonyms at fantastic.
Of or involving striptease: an exotic dancer.

Thesaurus:
Entry: exotic
Function: adjective
Definition: mysterious
Synonyms: alien, alluring, avant-garde, bizarre, colorful, curious, different, enticing, external, extraneous, extraordinary, extrinsic, far out, fascinating, foreign, glamorous, imported, introduced, kinky, naturalized, not native, outlandish, outside, peculiar, peregrine, romantic, strange, striking, unfamiliar, unusual, way out, weird
Antonyms: familiar, native, ordinary, usual
Concept: origin/source

So exotic is, of course, defined in a different way from person to person.

recently: the Croat island of Mali Losinj in the Adriatic. I have never seen such crystal clear water anywhere, ever. The Croat coast is the best-kept secret in Europe.

in the past: Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, circa December 1970. Visited with my family at Christmastime. In that period, Puerto Vallarta was still a sleepy, remote village, with only one big modern hotel, the Camino Real. PV ws put on the map by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who at that time owned a villa in what was know as "Gringo Gulch."

I suppose I have been to several places that are exotic to most of my friends and work colleagues here in England, but its just another place in the international airliners.net community.

I've been to PEK and CAN but so have a lot of other people! Maybe I should mention my visit to northern Finland and northern Sweden instead as there are so not so many pics from there, and it was rather wild and remote!

Unfortunately, I've not been anywhere in Africa or Laos etc., although I'm thinking hard about Cuba for next spring.

For me it is without question Vietnam. I visited there 6 years ago and absolutely fell in love with the country and it's charming people. Ho Chi Minh City was quite memorable, and one can still feel and experience the French flavour in both the cuisine and the architecture. Another great plus about Vietnam was its absolutely out-of-this-world beaches. Breathtaking. I would love to venture back there one day.

Quebec City. It may be in Canada, but it is still my favorite city to visit. Feels like Europe and it's only an 8 hour drive from ROC.

I've never really thought of Quebec City as being "exotic"; then again, I suppose it is rather unique and quite breathtaking considering it is in North America. Yeah, CanyonBlue, YQB (the old section) really is an eye-pleaser.

Now, if ya really wanna talk Canadian-exotica, then let me tell you about

How about Thunder Bay?  Laugh out loud That place was exotic...  Yeah sure

The most "exotic" place I've been is probably the Isle of Capri (the one off the coast of Italy, not the casino in Vicksburg, Ms.)

The most exotic places I've been have been Morocco and Ecuador. In Ecuador, I didn't care much for Quito, but the country has everything from from tropical coast to rain forest to snow capped mountains, all within such a small place. Taking the bus around the country is just breathtaking for the views, especially on the roads from the highlands to the jungle.

Ren41,

I was also in Kusadasi in 1992 or in 1993 (I can't remember exactly) and I agree, it was a really nice place, too bad that it was my only visit in Turkey.

Patrick

Edit: I was in Turkey again a few month ago but I didn't left the plane and I returned immediately back to Germany because I did a jumpseat flight just for fun.

Between Nepal and Bhutan in the Himalaya Mountains is a small principality that was annexed by India called Sikkim; its main city is called Gangtok. I stayed in the Nor Kil Hotel which was owned at that time by Diamond Oberoi of India. It was originally built as the guest house for a royal wedding.
Across the valley on the next hillside is the Rumtek Monastery, where I met Bhuddist monks and nuns of all ages and their hospitality was wonderful!!
Near the hotel was the English School for local girls run by a English lady, who could have come out of a story by Kipling without any trouble.
At the local Tibetan Museum, we met a Finnish woman who is a member of the Finnish National Academy of Arts. She was studying Tibetan Art as a theme for her own work.
One evening, we had a marvelous dinner party; guests included the two ladies mentioned about, a young (at that time) Diamond Oberoi, the Commanding General of the Indian Army in that region (we were about 40-50 miles from Tibet) and his son. They are Sikhs. In our group were a retired foreign correspondent who had lived in India at the time of its Independence in 1947 and was a close friend of Tensing Norgay, the Sherpa who reached the top of Everest with Edmund Hillary.
This is as exotic as anyplace I have had the opportunity to visit; the setting, 25 miles from Kanchenjunga, third highest mountain in the world and a holy place to Hindus; the people.

I am delighted to read some of you enjoyed Croatia. For me , as a French, it is not that exotic, and I have been there (and Slovenia, and Bosnia and Macedonia) at the time of Yugoslavia. And I came back to Slovenia after the partition.

Here is the list of really exotic places I have been.

- French Polynesia (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora-Bora, Tahaa, Huahine, raiatea, Marquisas Islands, and a few atolls, including Hao and Moruroa)

- Chile: Atacama desert, El Tatio geysers (the raod you take with a 4x4 climbs over 4800m !!!) (as high as the Mont Blanc, europe's highest mountain...but here, you stay in your car...) Calama (largest open air copper mina), Laguna San Rafael, Easter island

Here is my most exotic dinner: I had a Cheese fondue (speciality from Switzerland and French Alps) ... in Dubai....

I guess for me it would be Ulan Bataar, Santiago-Chile, Buenos Aires, Xi'an, Hong Kong, Seoul, Sendai, Tokyo, Matsushima, Murata, Furukawa, Osaka, Kyoto, Guangzhou, Bali, Beijing, Shanghai, Taipei.

While some of them are not so exotic, it's probably more exotic than most Americans dare to get.

Exotic to me might be bread and butter to you.

Most exotic for me was Trinidad, West Indies. Loved the African, East Indian & British cultural mix of the place. Grew up in Venezuela, so that's not so exotic for me, but the Gran Sabana / Angel Falls region of SW Venezuela is absolutely out-of-this-world. Strangest holiday experience was probably Jersey. I was intrigued by the history of the place (a tiny island belonging to the UK, just off the coast of France, that gave it's name to New Jersey and the only part of the UK to be invaded during WWII) but I seemed to be the only person under the age of 50 on the entire island.
