My Jaw Locked Open Just Now

Sat Oct 11, 2003 8:33 am

i dont get it, all i did was yawn and suddenly it wouldn't close. i was like wtf? I tried to swaying it sideways and forwards cuz i have an overbite so i guess that could have been it but I donno. But I'm always yawning, who doesnt? My mouth started to water and i had to close so i forced it and when my teeth came together, i heard a crunch or snap from near my left ear. Actually it sounded like a loud "crick"

My roomate was like, "I heard that".

Dude it felt like i had a big piece of styrofoam in my mouth, or like when ya open a car door there is a point wher it'll just sit there until you force it back. I was afaid I'd be stuck with in open. I'm fine now and I never felt pain, just kinda numb on the jaw's edge.

What's goin on?

You might have TMJ.

I had a mild case of it....something in my joint where the jaw connects to my skull had gotten injured somehow....and it swelled a bit, pushing the jaw bone out of the joint.

I used to have pops like that and they had me yelling in pain each time they happened. Only, it would happen every time I chewed on something....even bread.

I went to see a doctor and he basically told me to "dont do anything that hurts", the way to kind of solve it is to make the swelling go down, that means avoiding anything that would cause your jaw to pop....like opening your mouth wide. For for a while I didn't eat anything which required me to open my mouth wide...no burgers or sandwiches or anything, just soft food that could be easily eaten, like soup.

After a few weeks, the popping became less painful, jaw moved back into place. Just one problem: TMJ is permanent, which means although it gets better, it never really goes away.

So I dont have pain or problems anymore, but if I start talking, I hear little tiny clicks and pops in my jaw and head....and as a result of that I talk less than I used to because, simply, it annoys the hell out of me. But no one else can hear it.

My advice: Go to a doctor and have your jaw checked. I'm serious. If you might have popped your jaw out of place, things will get worse before they get better. Go get checked right now, the x-ray is worth the money believe me. Then take your doctor's advice.

That's my recommendation. You should always see a doctor. I hope you will.

Lehpron - Did mommy and daddy not pay enough attention to you as a child? Did you not get a hug now and then or something? I'd say I'm curious, but I know I'm not the only one.

Heres a novel idea for you:

See a doctor or a dentist...or even better, a psychologist.
