MG Midget... Should I Buy?

Mon Oct 13, 2003 5:35 am

I came across a very cheap, around 2500 dollars, MG Midget for sale, the question is, is it worth it? It is a very cool looking car, and it is red, the interior is spotless, and it runs well. Should i buy the 1970 MG Midget?

Do you like working on cars? If you don't like to, don't buy one. The notorious reliability problems of MGs and Triumphs of the 1970s (the British Leyland years) swayed me away from getting one (I was looking at a TR-8), as I am not too mechanically inclined (Hell, changing the oil is complicated enough for me). Even if it runs well, somethings got to be wrong for them to be selling it so cheap ($2500 sounds a little cheap for a Midget Mk.3). If you can see if you can take the car to a mechanic (look for one who specializes in British Cars) and get them to give the car a look over just to make sure everything on it is in good working order.

They can be tremendously FUN little cars, fuel efficient, cute, peppy, handle nicely...BUT...as noted above, be prepared to tinker with it and baby it. If you are looking for plain old reliable transport go find a Toyota. But if you just want to have fun...go for the MG.

Do a web search for MG owners clubs. They love them but most have a board filled with jokes about MG's. Now if you could get one of the new ones imported from the UK. Sharp little rides.  Smile

I rebuilt and drove a midget in the mid-80's. Great fun to drive, BUT

1) It came from an era where british cars had to be worked on almost daily. Consider the car your rolling thesis on mechanics. You will never stop tinkering with it.

2) The electrical system, Lucas if I recall, would get a little crazy. Once I started the car, put on the turn signal and the reverse lights came on (and no turn signal). A few minutes later, everything is back to normal. Wierd.

3) If you live in the U.S. (Palau? come off it) remember you will be driving a really tiny car in the middle of Suburbans and Hummers. This is not a car for anyone who suffers from inferiority complexes.

Palau was once part of the US, now we are an independent country. Yes, I live in Palau, but I am thinking about moving to the US for school, the universities. I am looking at a car to get for there, here, you really dont need a car.

Sorry, I thought you were one of those who gets off putting in BS in the "From" line, like Antarctica, etc.. You have to admit, you don't meet someone from Palau every day (Well... maybe YOU do  Smile/happy/getting dizzy)

yeah, not alot of people know where palau is, or what it is. This place is great, the diving is in my opinion, the best in the world. The only problem is that CO basically has a monopoly on all the flights. There are flights to GUM, Yap, and MNL on CO. We are an independent country too.

I would be worried that your neighbors wife would litteraly rape you from the back in her 2002 Suburban while talkin on the cell phone while coming to a stop sign.
