Funniest/Most Bizarre Sports Moment

Tue Oct 14, 2003 6:02 am

Well we had most memorable sports moments, how about sports moments you find the funniest or most bizarre. For me, here's two:

1. Jaguars punter gashing his leg with an axe:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-jaguars-hanson&prov=ap&type=lgns

2. Randy Johnson killing a bird with a fastball:

http://media.ebaumsworld.com/index.php?e=birdball.mpg
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/diamondbacks/2001-03-25-johnson-bird.htm

After the bird incident, I think, but am not sure, Jim Rome did a two minute bit talking about how hilarious it was, while on the screen they just replayed the incident over, and over, and over again. I never laughed so hard in my life  Big thumbs up

My bizarre sports moment is the father and son duo that bum rushed the field @ Comiskey Park and beat up the Royals' First Base Coach.

Funniest has to be Don Zimmer being thrown to the ground like a sack of potatoes Saturday.

Bizarre one for the Brits to remember: Phil Babb playing for Liverpool and his desperate attempt to clear the ball from the goalline but forgetting where the goalposts were and straddling them. Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it.

Most bizarre? The columbian goalkeepers, Rene Higuita, save against England back in 1995. He did the scorpion move!

I'll see if I can dig up a video. Oh wait, I found something better:

The Randy Johnson/bird confrontation would probably be high on my list.

Along similar lines, wasn't there an incident years ago where Dave Winfield (then of the Blue Jays, I believe) was charged with cruelty to animals when a fly ball that he hit into the outfield struck and killed a bird in flight?

Of course, high up on the most bizarre list must be the Cal/Stanford game back in the early 80's when the Stanford band rushed the field during the last play of the game, and the Cal guy ran it all the way back, dodging and weaving his way through the mass of humanity that littered the field. I don't think yet that Stanford's lived that one down yet.

Both events that come to mind for me are American football plays.

Back in the early 1990s, during a playoff game, this one Cleveland Browns wide receiver caught the ball in mid-air and was promptly hit by his coverage while still in the air. The guy hit his legs and completely flipped him... he landed literally on the top of his head (the crown of his helmet.) Of course the guy lost the ball... Everyone was seriously pissed because the guy put so much effort into catching the ball, and he held onto it when he was spun upside down, but it was called an incomplete catch because he lost control of the ball before his feet or knees touched the ground.
Luckily, he walked off the field a few minutes later. He could have had a broken neck.

I think the most horrifying one I ever saw was when Lawrence Taylor broke Joe Theisman's leg in 1985. That was replayed endless times on the news afterwards, because it was so obvious what had happened. Of course it was a career-ending injury.

CPH- That gif is AMAZING!

Bizarre/Funny:

Vai Sikahema of the Eagles returning a kickoff for a touchdown against the Giants and then punching the goalpost stand...strangest TD celebration ever

The pitch a few days ago in the Marlins - Cubs game where the Marlins pitcher managed to throw it into the first base foul area...pretty funny...

Darryl Dawkins and his massive dunk with the name that I cant even remember its entirety...

Spud Webb at a mere 5'7" winning the NBA dunk contest...

Funniest would have to be the Colts-Bucs game on MNF last week. Colts safety intercepts a Bucs pass, then fumbles the ball on the return, where it is picked up by Bucs WR Keenan McCardell, and ran for a TD. Never laughed my ass off during a football game until then. Runner up would have to be the Yanks-Red Sox scuffle last Saturday, where Pedro threw the Yanks coach to the field.

I forgot about the multi-lateral play... some pro football team, managed to score a touchdown with eight or so consecutive laterals.

The same year that the Stanford/Cal play occurred, an Iowa defensive back ran into the goalpost so hard that he knocked it down. Single-handedly. A Michigan State wide receiver was so impressed that he came over and gave the guy a high-five.

The hockey slam-dunk. A Boston College player behind the net scooped up the puck on his stick and placed it into the net.

Ulf Samuelsson taking a weird slapshot that went straight up and hit the jumbo-tron at Madison Square GArden.

One moment that I will always remember is the men's semi-finals and finals of the Japanese-style speed skating (Kerring or something like that) at the Salt Lake Oplympics.

In the semi-final the two guys in front crash during the final turn, and some unknown Australian guy makes the final although he is dead last in the heat.

During the final he is again hopelessly behind the other three skaters how is battling hard for first place. And then it happens again! All three front runners crash during the last turn, and the Australian guy cruises by them to take the gold. What made it even better was the look on this guys face - he was totally suprissed and could not believe he had won the gold medal.

Must be one of the luckiest gold medals in Olympic history!

In old Cleveland Stadium around 1992, A's Outfielder Jose Canseco went back to catch a long fly ball, and the ball hit him smack in the middle of the forehead, and bounced over the fence for a home run.

Jose could hit, but he never was much of a fielder.  Laugh out loud

I got to go with when OSU won the Fiesta Bowl in 2002. I mean they didn't really win the game, but they got the trophy.

Many years ago in a cricket the late Brian Johnstone - a well known commentator did a classic.

England playing the West Indies - England are batting with Peter Willey taking the ball. Michael Holding is the bowler.

The line goes something like this "welcome back to the Oval for the first over after lunch - the bowler is Holding, the batsman's Willey" - hysterical laughter all round
