We've just been bought by another con-pany (pun intended). So, we should stay alive a bit.

However, last time it happened ,we died about 9 months later.
So... outlooking not looking good

None, I work for the State of Texas but layoffs by the new a-hole agency director, are quite possible.

I'm working part time for an international agrobusiness company which employs more than 20000 people worldwide, annual revenue is $ 6.2 billions and profit is a few hundred millions $.

The possibility that they will go out of business is 0% (but that doesn't mean that everyone's job is safe...)

Well, my company I work for was once British... Then, last year in December, we were bought by an American investment cooperation, which "accidentally" also owns our biggest competitor... Now, branches in some countries such as France and Austria were closed, others (ie. Germany) were merged together...

Due to our size, nobody really bothered to clarify our situation here, but today we were informed that we are going to be merged with that other company... Ours will be maintained, while the others' employees have to go. Only a few of them will eventually be transferred to us.... Sad story, but happens every day!

Our parent company recently sold us to a competitor...guess we weren't doing well enough for them. For some stupid reason they are closing the office that made money and leaving open the office that lost money. Great logic, eh?

As a result of this, all 75 of us here in Seattle are being laid off. Our other office lost 150 but that still leaves them 450.

No chance that our parent company will go bankrupt. They have brought in a program called "Project Excellence" that saves money by laying people off. We call it Project Flatulence.
But that was when I ruled the world

Rafal,

When the Federal Government was closed in 1996, didn't you get paid after the dispute was settled? If so, doesn't that make it an additional 3 weeks of vacation?

I didn't get paid because I started my work second day after they turned back to work. Yesterday was my 7th aniversary at work.
I was lucky that my friend hooked me up right here.
This is a dream job. Not money wise, but work wise  Smile Its just a paradise.
3 more years and I will change my job. So 3 more years on paid vacations  Big grin

So your case excluded, weren't most other employees who had been there more than a day or two paid for the time the government was shut down?

Ok, I just spoke with a person that was here before me and he told me that they were off for 5 weeks and when they came back to work they got paid for that time.
He said that it wasn't really fun time. Everybody was nervous and nobody enjoyed that 5 weeks.

Rafal -

Thanks for the info

So at the end of the day, they got an extra 5 weeks of paid vacation (though they had to fret about it until it was "officially" announced).

I don't know why they worried about it. If memory serves me, the federal government has never had a shut down where it didn't pay its workers for the down time
