Want To Know About Surfing.

Tue Oct 21, 2003 11:01 am

"High Heels", my fiancee, and I want to do some outdoors activites together. Snorkeling is great and its something we plan on doing.

Scuba is out.

But we are thinking of taking surfing lessons together. What is your experience on surfing?

I'd love to hear from those of you who've tried it a few times, the amateurs. (you pros make it look too easy!)

Surfing? Where do you plan on doing that. In the wake of ships on the East River?  Big grin

Got to steer clear of possible asthma issues w/ scuba.

The skydiving could be fun. But I doubt I could get her doing that.

KROC, believe it or not, we get great waves here on Long Island.

Otherwise, I know one Alpha Delta Gamma who was so big, when she jumped in the ocean, the film crew of THE PERFECT STORM started filming the final scenes.

The hotels I stayed in Santa Monica and San Diego in August offered Surfing lessons with "Nick", met Nick and was anxious to go surfing but I could not make an appointment with him because he was booked with all the ESPN X-game folks in town staying at my hotel.

There are a few places along the East Coast of Florida Cocoa Beach, Melbourne where Surfing lessons are tought.

My suggestion is to start with a longboard. It's easier to start because they are more stable due to the length. In fact, come here to Hawaii and learn from the best in Waikiki. The longboard is what the beach boys here in Hawaii teach the tourists on. Be prepared to fall a lot and possibly feel sore in the upper body.

Long Island does have some waves. I used to go Bogey Boarding in Montaulk. There were quite a few surfers there.

I would have to agree with Ha763. Start with the longboard, and work up to a smaller board. Youll probably get a nipple rash, where your nipples are rubbed raw, unless you get a rash guard, or a teeshirt. I started with the longboard, and now I can ride the short ones with ease.

OK, Longboard, sounds good.

Sorry QANTASFOREVER. I missed your post way up there. honestly, I know nothing about the sport just yet. So we would be willing to try most anything.

The consensus seems to be go with longboard first.

Oh, how about windsurfing?? Is that easier, more fun? etc???

Went wind surfing in Cancun this summer, fun, but scared the hell out of me! You can get some serious speed going. To me, it seemed easier than jsut surfing as you have the sail to help balance you.

I will tell you that during my lesson, I pulled the damn thing down on top of me no less than 10 times!

Hang ten!

Rgds,

Greg

I've been surfing for a couple of years now, and boogie boarding even longer than that. It's basically based on balance when you first start. I've been snowboarding ever since I was 12, so that really helps. I'm a shortboarder, but I did start out with a longboard. It's a alot easier when you're first starting, or at least I think so. I surf off the Jersey shore, so needless to say the waves aren't that huge, but there big enough to get you going a bit.
