The Best Guitar Solo Of All Times?

Sun Oct 26, 2003 2:34 am

Closely related to another post, but totally different.

Here is my list:
1- pink floyd's only "solo": comfortably numb
2- Any or most of Slash's solos: sweet child'o mine, double-talkin' jive, and most of "use your illusion" songs
3- jimi hendrix - all along the watchtower, voodoo child (slight return), come on (let the good times roll)

and equally, not in any particular order:
metallica - unforgiven, or one
manowar - hail and kill
led zeppelin - heartbreaker
deep purple - highway star, made in japan version
eric clapton - cocaine
pearl jam - alive

voila
what about you?

Definately and of Slash's, but in the "new gnr" Finck and Buckethead do a great job replacing Slash. Also Deep Purple's Child in time sounds great.

Now THIS is where Comfortably Numb deserves to win the award.

David Gilmour's guitar solo in this song is spine-chillingly powerful...it absorbs you and everything around you and captivates you as you listen to it. One of the most moving, groundshaking solos I have ever heard. Try listening to this song when you're going through some pain. My God what this song does for you when you've had a bad day. The music practically vents all of your emotions...and at the end leaves you almost cleansed...relieved...it ends all too quickly.

Comfortably Numb. And none other.

OK, a bit baised from a Journey fan, but I vote for Neal Schon on "captured" and a personal favorite is his randition in "Colors of the Spirit". The latter sometimes makes me close my eyes and soak it in.

My faves have mostly been mentioned, like Comfortably Numb. so I'd like to add one from left field.

A very effective guitar solo does not have to be loud. Listen to Eric Clapton's solo on "Lay Down Sally". It sounds almost as if he forgot to turn on the amp. But it's just perfect.

In no particular order:
Van Halen (Eddie VH) - "Eruption" (and just about any song they've put out)
Pink Floyd (Dave Gilmour) - "Comfortably Numb", High Hopes, On the Turning Away
Scorpions (Mathias Jabs) - "Six String Sting" from the World Wide Live album
Yngwie Malmsteen - "Flight Of Icarus Dream Suite"
Wishbone Ash - "Lady Jay"
Iron Maiden (Dave Murray) - every solo he put out between 1986 - 1995

I would say that every guitar solo by David Gilmour is awesome.

It is definitely his work which has made me such a Pink Floyd fan.

David Gilmour is GOD!

Definately Guns n' Roses solo's. I LOVE that part in November Rain. Always always crank it up in the car when it reaches that part. The beginning of Sweet Child O' Mine - Sweeeet  Smile

Metallica, Unforgiven, just love that song in general aside from the guitar.
Uh oh, Metallica, Enter Sandman time! Exit light! Enter night! Take my hand. Off to never never land. Hee hee hee hee hee...........

Sorry, but I dont listen to "electronic sounds" with amplifiers...
My preference goes to artists and musicians -
Rather than guys who drill my eardrums...
I love guitar... I play piano and guitar...
Talk about Paco de Lucia, if you like classical or Spanish/South American folk...
Talk about Django Reinardt, if you like jazz guitar...
Talk about the Romero family, masters of guitar...
Concierto de Aranjuez... Concierto Andaluz...
Try the music of the Guaranis, of Paraguay and Argentina...
Brazil also has excellent guitarists... Bossa Nova/Jazz Samba...
Oh... you may say I am an old fart...
I love all of the above since I was a teenager like some of you are now.
The only "pop" music (guitar) for me, were the Beatles... my opinion.

Skipper you're totally right..and to play acoustic guitar really good takes a lot more technique than on the electric ones (I still remember Blackmore doing the fingertapping with a ribbon bound around the neck in order to mute the strings... Sad).

Besides several of those already mentioned, I still love the solo of Jimmy Page playing Stairway to Heaven, live version (song remains the same), though I don't like the song anymore.
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

ANYTHING Stevie Ray Vaughan - my faves being Crossfire, Little Wing, Texas Flood, and Riviera Paradise. Also points go to Kenny Wayne Shepard for "Blue on Black" and Joe Satriani in "Flying in a Blue Dream."

A Danish group called D-A-D did a song called cloudy hours, and whenever they plays it live, there's a guitar solo inthere that blows me away.

I've also taken a liking in the Radio Bemba Sound System, though it's not an official recording, but a bootleg.

Also, Slash's solo in November Rain, though MTV did piss me off sometimes because they would cut it right after the wedding (if you remember the video, it's where Slash steps outside and does his solo).

If I want to send chills down my spine, I'll just listen to a recording with Metallica from Roskilde Festival - the moment where Lars Ulrich steps on stage, you can really hear that I was hanging around with 59.999 other people that lovely night in June Big grin

Here's a good one: Daydream, from Robin Trower's 1975 Live album. Haunting, and you've never heard a Strat sustain like that.

WOW, I can't believe I forgot about Baker Street also.
Especially since I just the bought a Gerry Rafferty CD on EBAY last week.

I also have to agree completely on Stevie Ray Vaughn. He's my second favorite axe man.

CPH-R I have a song called Reconstruc-Dead by D-A-D from the mid-90's. Glad to hear they're still around.

I'm happy to see Comfortably Numb and November Rain win this thread by majority.. Personally I think Slash is a very gifted person. Most expressive solos in the world. The lespaul sound, thick strings, thick pick, string bending abilities, amp settings, pedals, I don't know. For me, it's hard to compare him. He's got "the edge".

David Gilmour too of course, eventhough the last few albums of PF don't match Roger Water's work. That is why guitarists should stick to playing guitar! Same goes for slash and his snakepit.

Kay,
Reconstrucdead is from the late 90's if my memory serves me right  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

They're still around, though they took a bit of a hit when they decided to do a travelling festival with a couple of other bands. The problem was, that most of the bands had already toured the various summer festivals, so when their own festival started in the late summer, there were literally no people at the shows. So they stopped after only 1 show (they had planned for 6 or 7 I think), and when the creditors wanted their money, the band said that they had nothing to do with the tour etc. Which was all fie & dandy, if it wasn't because they had been out prior to the start and saying that they'd lose their house, car etc. if it went down.
